Hey all,

I'm sure as we have so many riders here that at one point wore glasses, you/they probably decided to get their vision corrected.

I'm really interested in doing the same. I'm sick of breaking my glasses, the vibration of the bike making the glasses jump around when I ride, waking up and fumbling around to find them, having my eyes irritated from contacts, running out of contact lenses...

It's about that time!

Please refer your best lasik surgeon and/or I believe there's a new procedure, but I don't know too much about it.

Any info appreciated.

I'm actually having my LASIK procedure done tomorrow morning. I've been looking forward to it for quite a while now. I would refer you to Furlong Vision Correction (http://www.furlongvision.com), but they're in Campbell and I notice that you're in Newark.

I'm getting "custom LASIK", which is about a couple years new. From my understanding, it's based on the principle that while your eye may have an overall prescription, certain areas of the eye will be different. For example, my prescription is -4.50, but it might be -6.00 in one area and -3.50 in another. They use a machine to map your eye and program the LASIK machine according to this mapping.

Let me know if you have any other questions...

Andrew,

Please let us know how that goes. I've been thinking about it for years and I've heard good things about Furlong.

Sounds interesting - we just withdrew pre-tax savings for this for me this year.

I'd be very curious about the custom lasik, because I have very slight astigmatism - I have a -3.75 in the horizontal plane and only -3.25 in the vertical in my left eye, the right eye is -3.25 in all directions.

Daniel, how old are you (if you don't mind sharing)? The only reason I ask is if you're under thirty-five, your eyes can still slightly be changing. I've wanted Lasik for a year, but since my eyes keep changing from 3.0 to 3.25 and back, I'm waiting until this December.

Hopefully getting rid of glasses isn't the main reason you'd like Lasik, because if your eyes are still changing, the slightest change can affect your vision (not dramatically), which you might need glasses to get it back to 20/20 when riding at night or in the rain.

Just a heads up and don't settle for an insanely cheap eye surgeon..there's a reason why they would be y'know?

Yeah, I set my FLEX this year specifically for this procedure. You guys will know how this works out if I reply to this thread on Saturday or not. Supposedly, I should be able to drive myself to my Saturday morning checkup appointment.

Ask your Optomitrest for recomendations. Allot of web sites on the subject.
I had Lasik done by my optomitrest that used regional surgical center's equipment.

It's ironic now don't wear glasses. But when riding like to wear goggles :teeth

I had the primitive lasik performed (flap 'n zap) back at the end of '97, over 8 years ago. I'm 20/20 now, no regrets. But I do have a very slight halo effect at night when I see a bright light against a dark background. It doesn't bother me and it's still better than my vision with contacts, so no worries. But I'll bet the new lasik handles this situation alot better. I think I had it done at the "Laser Eye Institute" or someplace like that. I picked this place because it was close to my office. (great reason, huh?!?) :blush

Good luck!

i'm 29. this is one of the reasons why i've waited so long. i also heard that having this procedure done too young can end up being way worse than not.

ppl with astigmatisms are not the best candidates and i believe mine is pretty bad. i'm like wothless without my glasses and i'd be even more worthless without my vision which is why i want to make damn sure i pick and honest practice. i wasn't thinking about going to the "chop shop" down the road either. i value my vision and will spend the money.

ridding myself of my glasses isn't the main purpose, but it's one of the major ones. i mean, really, ppl who have lasik done are ppl who want to get rid of the glasses, why else would you do it? if you're comfortable with the specs, then you wouldn't do anything other than wear them, right?

i'll check furlong out! i don't care how far the office is as long as they're honest and good!

thanx all!!! :Port

yeah, i've been looking for quite some time, but again since i'm barely now 29 i'm starting to get more interest.

i've seen the net, but all that can be misleading. i want to hear it from ppl that i can somewhat trust on their experiences.

I'm 28 and my prescription has been stable for a couple of years now. During my consultation, they mentioned that astigmatism can be corrected through LASIK. I'll give you a more complete write-up on Saturday. I went to Furlong because of a friend referral also.

i have my 1st one on one consultation next thursday at 1pm!!!!!

!!!!!w00t!!!!!

Best thing to do is go talk to them. The first consultation is free and they'll tell you if you're a candidate, what the procedures are, and which one is best for you.
I'm getting custom lasik the beginning of March with my tax free dollars and definitely recommend doing the same because I'm saving a ton of money each month on taxes.
Dr. Furlong will be performing my procedure too. He's statistically the best in the bay area.

I had it done 4 years ago at 50 and it was pretty good but it did cause me to have to wear reading glasses I didnt need before the surgery in the last year or so my vision has deteriorated in one eye so I may once again require glasses for general vison not just reading.
I still see better out of one eye than before the surgery but my right eye is not so good. one thing to beware of I have blue eyes and It hurt like hell after the surgery I had to take vicodin left over from knee surgery. the next day at my follow up appt we were talking in the waiting room all th blue eyed people hurt after the surgery the brown eyed people didnt. I asked the doctor he said thats normal. The eye that hurt really bad is the one im now having trouble with I dont know if they are related or just old age.

I got mine done last year, actually i am getting a small adjustment Monday. i went to gary Kawesch, http://www.2020eyesite.com/. He has done over 25,000 of these and also has done many sports figure, celebrities etc. I wore glasses since i was like 5 years old, nearsightdness with astigmatism. I could not function with out my glasses back then.

I am so happy not to have my glasses fog up in my goggles, etc. surfing and waterskiing is better due to being able to see better. My night vision isnt the greatest, but over all, its totally worth it. My eyes were bad so i had to pay the 2K per eye, but people with better vision it will cost less.

I had them use the Intralase laser for the flap, seems safer than someone personally making the cut, but it does cost more. Then i had the Custom Lasik. I could see ok the night of, and seeing normal the next day.

I had mine done thru gary Kawesch too about 2 years ago just when the custom lasik came out.

Had perfect vision ever since and every day without contacts is awesome.

Would definitely recommend it.

have they given you an explanation as to why your sight isn't so good at night? and if you wear glasses does that fix the issue or is it even an option.

that is one of my main concerns. hearing that ppl get this done and then a year or two later not being able to see that good anymore without the option of glasses anymore. :confused

also, i heard that dr. kawesch got into some trouble and he was on the news. don't know if he lost his med license, but i still hear his adverts?
