Hi im shopping for a plain black helmet. Having trouble weather I should get a Matte Black or Gloss Black. Curious about everyones preference and why?

seriously. All my shiney helmets, if you dont clean them at least once a month, and every 2-3 days in the winter, end up with grime, guts, and scratches.

White helmets are safer.

I recently purchased a matte black helmet. But, that was mainly because my bike is matte black.

Unless your bike is gloss black, I would go with a matte black helmet. Most of your other riding gear is not going to be shiney anyway.

Look here lemming... Get what you like and F*ck what anyone else thinks. No matter what you pick your *$ cred just went down and we all know thats what it is all about.
:twofinger

Seriously? You're really asking a bunch of people for their opinion on what color (or finish) to put on your head? :facepalm

I think you should get pink with little kittens and hearts and maybe some rhinestones. :rofl

Also, matte or shiny, it doesn't matter, you'll want to clean it when it covered with bugs. :cool

its for a very good reason actually. I am not asking for the color, I was concern because ive heard matte had heat issues where it would heat up alot more than the gloss helmet, and also ive heard that its harder to clean.

I didnt want to bring that up because I wanted to see if anyone would notice.

Seems entirely likely. You figure gloss is only glossy because it's reflecting something...so it will absorb less heat. How much less, that's the question.

Ah, the old "I wanted to see if anyone would notice" line. LOL where have I Heard that before??? Are jooo serious???

thats awesome for you.

In my defense my original post specifically asked "Why" if my intentions were to buy whatever was "better looking" I wouldnt have probably been so specific about it.

and the reason why I didnt want to mention it in the first place was because i needed to know how common it is for people to notice this. If no one had brought up the heat or cleaning issues on matte helmets I would assume its not common or a big factor which would lead me to lean more towards a Matte helmet.

amazing how you can be so kind and polite on the oh so many problematic threads you have posted (ie. your roomies stealing from you, towing issues or sprocket problems) but a real d*ck when it comes to answering or posting suggestions for other people on other threads that WASN'T created by you.

Not necessarily. The difference between a glossy and matte surface is how spread out the reflections appear because of surface texture. Compare a shot of a matte black helmet to a glossy one-- the areas of the glossy helmet that don't have a specular highlight are going to appear darker than the same areas on the matte helmet, even if the main specular highlight on the matte helmet appears dimmer. The actual color of the helmet would probably have more to do with the amount of heat it picks up, than its surface finish.

Matte helmets are harder to clean, but dirt isn't as noticeable on them.

And you won't notice the heat difference anyway. Helmet liners are basically fancy Styrofoam cups, which are great at insulating. Heat from the outside won't affect the inside of the helmet very much.

I have a matte helmet. It gets hot because it's black. I haven't noticed it getting hotter than a shiny helmet.

It's not hard to clean.

Also, if you are new here you should really calm down. You will wear yourself out responding to every perceived attack. Thicker skin :thumbup Remember you asked for an opinion.

lol welcome to a forum. Need to chill out or you won't find it very enjoyable on this thing we like to call Ze interwebz.

Good luck on finding a helmet. Color is nonsense. Just pick what brand/style fits you best, then go for color. If a glossy one fits better than matte, then go with the former. It's not rocket science.

:laughing Sounds like you're the one getting your ruffles ruffled.

Fit first, graphics second. Like someone already mentioned, the insides of the helmet are great at insulating so no need to worry about excessive heat transferring to your noggin. Also, light colored helmets are a bit more visible. :thumbup

I still think you should get pink with kittens and hearts and rhinestone accents!

:teeth Welcome to barf!

Ok thanks for the welcome and the tips, ill keep that in mind.
Thanks for the helmet suggestions also.

You guys clean your helmets?
