As my car is near its death I am contemplating buying new car so I have a choice to make

Evo

Friend of mine just bought a Speed 3. Another friend is a WRX freak.

I'd say Speed 3 for fit and finish (if you want a good car that is decently zippy with a nice interior) or WRX if you just want a fast and fun toy. They're not really directly comparable.

Evo is a great car! I rode one over the 17 summit and it felt incredible - the faster u go the stronger it felt to grip the road.

its over my price range though im looking for 20K car not a 35K one.

why aren't they compatible? speed3 has more torque and more hp than wrx, but it lags in 0-60 due to front wheel drive only. WRX is slower at high speed acceleration though. 70 to 90 e.g.

wrx is a 4 wheel drive which has its plusses and minuses (mostly a plus)
speed3 has nicer interior and is a tad cheaper

Buy preowned.

Does it have to be a family car? Life is short, get something fun...make the family take the bus.

I suggest other. I bought an 05 RX8 a few weeks ago. Options are almost completely maxed out, including the leather red/black interior. It is a sweeeeeeeeet lookin ride. Apparently they aren't highly in demand cuz I was able to find one for under 12 grand within two weeks of starting my search. It's not the fastest car in a straight line, but it can hang with just about anything in the corners.

doesn't mileage kinda suck ass on those for such a small car?

You try squeezing 240+ horses out of 1300ccs and see how good your gas mileage is. :x

I have a WRX. I'll tell you what i love and hate about it.

Likes:
-It's fast as fuck
-It handles like a dream
-It looks pretty cool
-4wd

Dislikes:
-It's loud. Not engine loud, but road noise loud
-It rattles like a snake. I don't know if ity is just my car, but I have gotten tot he point I hate driving it because all I hear is the dashboard rattling.

Now I will say that up until I bought my motard, I loved this car. Now I am kind of indifferent to it. My motard gives me all of the thrill that the WRX did, but it's funner. I wish I had a truck.

Got 24 mpg on the highway ride home (134 miles) with about 20 miles of spirited hills and curves to start out the trip. Been averaging 18-20 since then, about half of it is stop and go driving, the other half is freeways going 65-75. I've heard horror stories about the mileage, but haven't seen it yet. I'm pretty happy with 24 on the highway, taking it on a trip in June so we'll see if I can get in the upper 20's.

It's not 1300cc's no matter how much crack Mazda smokes. It's 2600.

Suddenly the HP and gas consumption make complete sense!

Sorry, pet peeve.

Mazda detuned them at port to make the catalytic converters last the federal requirement of ### thousand miles, if you're interested in squeezing a few more mpgs out of it, along with a nice little spike in horsepower, you can get a chip from it that will have the ecu "re-learn" driving patterns with the factory specs. FYI.

It's only 232. :teeth

One benefit of the rotary engine and it's tiny size/weight is the weight distribution is nearly 50/50 front to rear. The car is absolutely awesome, I dare anyone to test drive one and then not buy it. Don't go brand new tho, they are waaaaay overpriced til someone else drives it a year or two.

that's not heinous, but for the performance it's pretty bad when you can get a bigass american V8 that'll get nearly if not more than 30 on the highway with 400hp or so

Indeed. Or even a used C6 Z51 can be had for the kind of money a 'Speed 3 or WRX goes for new.

But if it has to be a sport compact, I'd also consider the Cobalt SS or Solstice GXP coupe. VW's R32 is a good entry in this group but it just costs too damn much for what it is.

Between the two choices though I'd pick the Mazda. Subaru's quality just really is not so good. And if it's your only car, you really don't want to have to deal with minor problems every few months.
