Most dangerous dam

I don't remember reading about a billion dollar find.
Yeah Saddam was no Jimmy Carter but any money they had would have went to immediate needs like food and medical.
The problem started with engineers choosing a poor site for the dams location. But that was being addressed with a second dam. Saddam made the poor choice of invading Kuwait but sanctions against the country for that were only going to hurt the citizens, Saddam wasn't the one who would starve or drown.

.
Not a great source, but it was all over the news back then:
Iraq: U.S. Soldiers Find Hundreds Of Millions Of Dollars Hidden In Baghdad Homes

So, what would you have suggested? Just let them say 'my bad', slap them on the ass and let them go on their merry way?

sanctions never work

they only further embolden the leader by creatig a situation where the populace is dependednt on them
I think that the whole idea behind the sanctions was to encourage the general population to 'take out their own trash' and deal with their home grown problem that has spilled over into an invasion of Kuwait.

What did they do with Japan & Germany.
The Middle East was always treated as a sub species.
Japan and Germany had quite different cultures from Iraq, and they fully capitulated. That was not the case with Saddam.

We'll never know whether a different approach would have worked out better. Hindsight is 20/20.

That whole region would have been better off if we had never Invaded them over fake reports of WOMD, but that's a whole other discussion.

That may have been the story sold to drum up support for sanctions and may have worked had Iraq been a democracy. I don't suspect anyone behind the sanctions ever believed that an overthrow would be the likely outcome.
Its was a rouse to appear punishment was being doled out but the US wanted Saddam there just as much as he himself did, he was predictable and someone they knew.

The latter is true, Bush Sr understood that and thus backed off from taking Saddam out of power. Bush Jr wasn't at all qualified to understand that, too bad he didn't listen to his father who I would bet said something to him at some point about the ramifications.

I don't know what they actually intended, there is the possibility that somebody was profiting somewhere from the actions they took...

You can't even stand up behind your racist statement? Ignorant and spineless.

Muslim isn't a race FYI....

Not defending his comment tho. Race = Arab, African etc

Religion = Islam

Follower of Mohammed = Muslim

So the comment has not gone unnoticed in several circles. But continuance of a wanting a reply will either detract from the original post, or just be about the one post. Up to you guys :dunno :(

Under the rule of Iraqi President Saddam Hussein, General Taha Ramadan chose the site with the aim of providing jobs and improving the living conditions of the population in the Mosul area.

I guess they don't have any geotechnical engineers over there. Hey, who wants to go to Iraq and do some dam grouting?! Probably get hazard pay...

One could also say that Jewish isn't a race, but try and say "1.5MM Jews drowned - the horror!" and see what happens.

Eh, I dunno. I read the post this morning and have been biting my tongue about it.

But if it was meant in a serious way that is fucked. There's no two ways around that. The idea that 1.5 million people being wiped out is in any way acceptable is a bigoted, horrible thing to say. I have no problem with the membership letting their feelings about the statement be known so long as the opinions are stated within the TOS. So far people have been doing an excellent job of that.

Do just the littlest bit of post history on him and you'll see it was not a joke at all.

I'm not surprised at all by his comment, or his lack of personal conviction. Reminds me of guys that whisper nigger when blacks walk by but shut up the minute they turn around.

Yeah, thought of that after I posted in anger/disgust.

Yes, thought the same thing when I hastily posted in anger/disgust.

The unfortunate reality is that comments like marklins' can easily derail a legitimate conversation, as they've done here. My comment has already been made and I can't do much more beyond no longer commenting on it, after now.

Happy to discuss via PM.

Remember when jobs in Iraq were being dangled like a carrot in front of nations in order to buy support for the invasion.
Interest in Iraq jobs sort of declined after the Nick Berg video.
