Moto Discrimination in Renting

It's easier to ask for forgiveness than permission.

You really don't know me that well, Connie. :laughing

OK, let me rephrase... you present as a really polite, clean-cut young man! :p

And don't volunteer any information. Find a place you like, and just be quiet about your hobbies.

Don't even ask about the garage. Let them tell you about it. When you show up for the viewing be like..."ooh it's got a garage? That would be nice." People who ask about garages want to turn it into a living area for their fugitive buddy/relatives, grow weed indoors or start a chop shop.

Yet, we still have some fucknugget who drives a straight-pipe piece of shit Miata that's louder than God himself sharting into a vuvuzuela.

That's the best thing I'll read today. :laughing

if it's not allowed, it'll say on the lease...just get a copy of the lease and read it....if buying in an association, it'll say in the hoa rules...when i was searching for places, i found specific language that prevented me from moving in...example:

  1. 1 vehicle per designated parking space (you can't park a motorcycle with a car even if it fits or park multiple motorcycles in a single car space)
  2. vehicles parked within the property must have current registration and insurance (no track or non-op vehicles)
  3. only emergency repairs allowed within the property (you can jump a battery or put a spare tire, but oil changes or any mechanical work is not allowed)
  4. excessive noise (it's based on neighbor's complaints)

if it's not on the lease, you are not breaking any rules...except for excessive noise...motorcycles are always a big complaint in any apartment, building or neighborhood...parking in non-designated areas and noise are the two biggest complaints...

By "amateur mechanic" you mean you wash your gixxer and change the side covers? Cos thats all Ive ever seen you do! :laughing

First impressions are everything man, I rolled up to check out my rental in my g35 sedan, dressed decently not over the top. I now live in a 3 bed 2 bath nice home, huge garage, nice yard. With just ONE roommate, a good friend of mine.

Wouldn't wanna have it any other way.

I'll borrow a pimpmobile for next time then. :thumbup

She gave me a tour of the house which took about an hour and afterwards she said, "Yeah, if you're gonna live here, you'll have to get rid of that bike." I said "What does it matter to you? What's the problem with my motorcycle?" She wouldn't give me a straight answer, just told me it would "disrupt the peaceful environment of the living space" or some hippy crap like that.

:rofl

I would have done a burnout in the street on my way out.
That would'a shown her!

Fail.

You forgot the upper decker prior to departure.

Seriously, why wouldn't she mention that BEFORE the 1 hour tour? It would have saved both parties a bit of time and effort.

She was waiting for him to hit on her. She may not have wanted him for a roommate... but she's Hot Hippie College Chick... he was supposed to hit on her! :laughing

When I finally found a decent unit with a private 1 car garage , after six months of living in hotels. I mentioned nothing of bikes etc.

I jumped on the unit and had good credit etc. and it was awarded to me before the showing.

A couple of months later when the landlord stopped by to do some repairs and I was in my garage working on my bike listening to music and drinking beer. He came in and was amazed at what I had done to the garage , wall to wall carpeting, stereo , lighting etc. and everything was immaculate. He commented on how well I have kept the place. And gives a shit less what I do out there because I keep the noise down and keep everything clean and in check.

At the time the garage contained 3 bikes, one torn apart.

P.S. the unit is a 5 unit apartment building with everyone having there own private 1 car garage.

Good advice in this thread.

As a former renter (who did some light mechanical work in the garage/carport) and current landlord, I would agree - don't go selling yourself as an amateur mechanic. We all know what you mean, but among the non-moto and gearhead folks, you will start alarm bells ringing.

I never mention motorcycles. All my bikes have been stock, and thus very quiet. Unfortunately too many people with unreasonably loud bikes have made motorcyclists very bad neighbors among the general populace. Just think - they don't notice the quiet bikes, only the loud ones.

Keep it to what is relevant. You are looking for a place with a garage, close to such and such, X bedrooms etc. You make XXX income from the profession you have been in for YYY years, and have ZZZ credit. If you like the place, turn in your fully completed application and supporting docs required. Ask if there are any other applicants. Anything else is irrelevant.

Once you move in, if you are keeping the place tidy, not disturbing neighbors, and paying the rent on time, you are unlikely to get hassle from anyone for doing light work on your bike. The lease will probably not allow it, but you'd have to be a royal douche or really unlucky to have anyone bother you about it.
