Moto Guzzi V7 Racer - thoughts?

(edited).....I've used T Markus in Burbank, CA. His work is stellar. His price is fair. His method is extremely thorough. And he stands behind his work. He has been lining tanks for Pro Italia and other shops from around the country for a few years now. TMarkus.com or 818.759.4724.....

thx - that's a very useful contact for future use.....

Guzzi

This site came up on a search I was doing so I hope you don't mind me passing through.
I bought my V7 Racer over a year ago.
I've been riding all my adult life, mostly big sports tourers (FJ1200, ZZR1100 etc.)
I can honestly say that no bike I have owned has given me so much pride of ownership an fun as this little Guzzi.
Bikes like these don't ride themselves.
They are about getting the most from the least, which is where the fun is.
A good spread of torque masks any short comings in the bhp dept, meaning it never feels strained.
Comfortable cruising speed is about 70/80mph with plenty in reserve, although overtakes on two way roads do require more forward planning than with the fast tackle.
I regularly ride with a guy who has a Honda 600 Bros, and both bikes are about evenly matched I'd say.
Anyway here's a couple of pics of mine.
I added the Stucchi endurance fairing but now it's on, I'm not so sure.
What do you think.
With or without.

looks on a bike like this is very personal, I think it looks good either way, maybe change the colour of the touring fairing? and a big welcome from the other shore......:thumbup

looks way cool either way -- v nice moto

while nekkid's the place to start, that top-half's loverly on yer Racer - I say, "keep it" [black]

That they have the nerve to use Motoguzzi and racer together is laughable. If you want a fancy tractor, sweet, performance not anywhere near the gsxr, too heavy, waaay too slow.Just another trophy bike
:rofl at specs

That's the Truth of it...shades of White Rabbit, As done by Grace Slick.

Modest hp power yes but it has some torque, very cool styling, good components and stands out in a crowd of typical bikes.

Fast enough to get you in trouble and lots of inquiries from other bike fans.

I rode one and if there are good components on it they don't add up to a "good" bike. It felt like riding a 40 year old bike (maybe thats the point) It was a thoroughly disappointing ride & I can have fun on Honda 90, nothing about it can justify the price. Unless your in it for it's appearance I'd stay away from it.

Look into Thruxton - it has better style (IMO), more accessories, better dealer network, more power, probably cheaper too. You can pretty much forget about Duc Sport 1000 - it's really hard to get, and it has it's own set of problems. The other way to do it is customize a HD - $hit, did I just said HD? :rolleyes

Check this out:

Where can I buy this bike....

I assume this is another Roland Sands masterpiece, no?

yes, it is RSD - pipe, subframe, swinger & monoshok grafted onto an XR1200

noice, but no biggie......

Show bike

This is a show bike not a go bike: Beautiful style painfully slow. That being said if your looking for a machine to be seen on-this is the one. Leave the high performance antics to others and bathe in the admiration that comes from owning something this nice.

Other than the engine, that's a cool bike.

well, that there's the crux of this entire air-cooled retro V-twin deal -
mebbe these bikes don't pass muster when compared to modern I4s, etc......

but they sure look good, & are lotsa FUN to ride !!

Well hey.
My friend just spent 20,000 restoring and customising a 60's mini.
He could have bought any number of modern high performance cars for that.
You going to slam him too ?
So what bikes aren't about looks.
We saying that looks and pose value don't factor into a lot of people's bike buying decisions ?
We all wanna feel good about our ride.
Bikes aren't only about the drudgery of every day transport.
For many they are a lifestyle choice.
Why else would the guy I saw today on a GSXR wear colour matched race leathers and race replica helmet, when he could have worn plain leathers and a plain white lid.
We all want bikes that look good, and not everyone wants big numbers to brag about in order to be king of the pub car park.
The poseurs are the one's who buy mega powerful bikes when in reality, they'd be hard pushed to find the limits of a Puch Maxi.
I see em all the time, but I always give em a wave as I go by.

Solution?

I figure if the V7R has a single disc front brake, adjustment free suspension, and 50hp. Why not start with a cheap POS, that is reliable?

I'd rather get a Thruxton. Plenty of style, 10 or 11 hp more, cheaper to begin with, and much simpler to work on, I would imagine. But everybody has their style passions, so....

so, are we done here?

I just don't wanna beat up on the new guy, what with the Queen's Celebration & all......

/thread....

Yeh, but Moto Guzzi did make racebikes, and the original V7 Sport must have had a lot more HP than this new one; a friend of mine owns one which was clocked at 129 mph on the front straight at Portland International back in the day.
My Aprilia Caponord could barely manage 125 before I had to brake hard for turn 1.
Nothing wrong with trading on past glory, that's all Triumph is doing with the Thruxton, and I think this is way better looking, and undoubtedly sounds better too.

It's not that it's a twin. It's not that it's air cooled. Hell, I think the Ducati air cooled two valve engines are fantastic.

It's the 45 degree angle, the OHV configuration and the HEFT tat I can't get over.

I bet the bike is a TON of fun to ride. My conjecture is that it would be even MORE fun with a different engine.

I get that the cruiser crowd is traditional and demand the traditional approach. The XR1200 is not a cruiser. Why not outfit such a cool bike with an engine selection that makes sense for the bike's purpose? A twin is still IDEAL. Why not liquid cooled? Why not OHC? Why not lighter? That bike with a suzuki twin would be :boobies!! Better yet, why not outfit the XR1200 with the Rotax 1125 designed in conjunction with Buell. That would be :leghump
