Moto Guzzi V7 Racer - thoughts?

OK
Would you like to hear the whole sorry saga about the new FJ1200 I bought that the head lifted on, causing extensive damage.
Or how about the new V Max a friend of mine bought, that self destructed, the cause being a nut that had worked loose finding it's way into the engine totalling it.
What about the sorry saga about BMW's dreadful integrated servo assisted braking system that was know to be DANGEROUS when it broke down.
Phew.
I could go on, but I doubt you'll ever accept that anyone other than Guzzi can send out a duff bike,

Awesome pissing match is awesome?

Never said there was a perfect manufacturer. Look at the babies that die within a few days of spiting the curtain and don't make it: Even the most advanced machine on the planet, does some bad builds too.

Just suggesting that there are other options when it comes to buying a bike that is really only available from 'destination,' dealerships, and is expensive for what it really is.

That 250cc KawaYamaSuzuki thing that isn't CARB legal would be perfect for those with a lap wet with cafe dreams. $4k and 25HP it would be perceived as a lot more fun, and you could still afford a bike that could get get you to work when late, Plus it would have a lot less insurance costs when all the new 'Imma Cafe it,' guys are bouncing off the guard rails after posing with it in their 3/4 helmets and stylish leather costumes.

Servo BMW don't work when there is no power (getting your info from the internet?) The guy that caused that 'challenge,' made it happen on purpose. Servo brakes assist on the one I rode was amazing.

Every manufacturer can put out a 'duff,' anything. We're all allowed an opinion on the anonymous internet. I'm way more of a condescending know-it-all jerk in person.

Oh how wrong you are.
Yes they were amazing when they worked, but if you'd read my post, I said the problems came when they broke down, which they did on my R1200C Montauk.
If you wanna get an idea of what that's like, roll your car down a steep hill with the engine off, then try and stop quickly.
Get the idea.
It was terrifying and dangerous, and BMW have now ditched the system.
What annoy me about people like you is that you judge a whole brand in the context of your own experiences.
By far and away the worst bike I ever owned was a Yamah FJ1200, which I had to get ride of after 6 months.
Would you say then that it would be fair to suggest that Yamaha are a duff brand ?

That V7 is nice. I might buy one instead of the Diavel or the Panigale..! :ride

finally!!

^^^^someone^^^^ with vision, & a fine sense of proportion

There are loads of examples of 3/4 wheel vehicles using motorcycle engines.
The new Morgan three wheeler uses an S&S bike engine and I believe Fireblade engines are used in the Caterham.
How some people assume that because a bike engine is used in a vehicle other than a bike, that this is what that engine is derived from is beyond me
:wtf

The story that Guzzi adapted an engine designed originally for a tractor may or may not be wrong, but given that it was published by people who should know (or maybe should know better!), it's not unreasonable for people to believe the story.

The fact that the tractor with a 90 degree transversely mounted engine predates the V-twin Moto-Guzzi motorcycle by a good four years suggests to me that this engine was at the very least, designed with more than one application in mind.

I could name dozens of three and four wheeled cars that used motorcycle engines. The main difference between almost all of those and the Guzzi tractor is that Moto-Guzzi built both the engine and the tractor.

What comic book did that information come from.
Guzzi never made tractors.
What are you talking about
:wtf

Right, OK then.
The Guzzi twin was not derived from a tractor engine, This based on the definitive account given in Greg Field's book, Guzzi Big Twins, MBI Publishing, 1998.

There was a 750cc engine for the 3x3 military vehicle called the Mechanical Mule, which Todero helped develop. There was also a 500cc engine that Carcano designed for the Fiat 500. Both were 90 degree V-twins, but neither was developed into the 700cc Guzzi motorcycle engine that Carcano and Todero later designed. Greg includes direct quotes from both Carcano and Todero explicitly denying the connections, and also gives important facts about features of the designs that are different from the Guzzi motorcycle engine.

It is a story that is just too good to be true, or to go away even in the face of direct evidence.

Greg Field's book is extremely impressive throughout, and based on a great deal of research and interviews with principal parties to Guzzi's history.

It might be a good idea to at least peruse it before making such wild statements based on what you heard down the pub

:wtf

Look, I wasn't outright disputing your claim, I was taking exception to your statement implying that anyone who had heard or read only the story of the "mule" is stupid.
Given lack of any information to the contrary, those articles I read years ago in Classic Bike and The Classic Motorcycle (and I believe, even Encyclopedia of the World's Motorcycles made the same claim) were all I, and many others who are only casual fans of the marque had to base our opinions on about where that engine came from.

And thanks for finally providing a reference to back up your claim.

I don't care what the haters are saying about the V7. If I wanted a "real hand made racer." I'd be shopping on Craigslist for a rat bike and spend the money I would save, on strippers and beer..! :laughing :twofinger

I think this thread is a little different than what GuzziGuy (Ed?) hoped for :wave

That was a great article Gabe, as always. Does Guzzi use the same scale to weigh their bikes that Aprillia does?

I'd still intend to add Paul's Dingotre and eventually an Aiace to the collection when I can improve the storage situation.

The one that makes the bike weighed on it 30 pounds heavier than it should be? Maybe.

& there ya go!!

the Honda's a superior machine in most any measurable area, & yet......it's:

--water cooled
--ugly
--zero racing heritage for this model [discounting '80s turned-sideways AMA Pro GNC wins!]

to this greybeard, the Guzzi wins everywhere [save the drag strip] - simply copy Ed's "City Bike" instructions & you'll be golden

Speaking as someone who has owned two CX500's back in the day, I can confirm that you are talking out of your ass.
Tell me how you feel it's a superior machine.
I'm really looking forward to this
:laughing

dude, this is too EZ - a CX over a V7 with:

drag strip time
top speed
seat height [I'm 5'11"]
parts availablilty

you may have missed that I hate the CXs & consider the V50s too small

however, for the purposes of your own loverly 750 speciale foto & ideas -
well, no wethead Honda's ever gonna be as appealing as a sano Guzzi
