Mounting camera on a helmet - which side?

i don't think that tethering a camera to a vent cover is such a good idea. most of the covers ive seen are held on w/ double-sided tape.... not exactly sturdy enough to catch a falling/dangling camera.

It's not tethered to a vent cover. Check the pic.

I made a small loop, about three inches, so it can't fall far or get in the way of anything. I took out the cheek pad, put the strap though the loop, then put the cheek pad back in. Unless the 'keeper clip' breaks it's not coming off.

I wonder, when mounting it on top, how much it depends on riding position? Like when you just stand on the feet, or ride standard bike, or ride sport bike - i wonder if you actually bend your neck or just move your eyes up? I never tried to understand what my body is actually doing. If I use neck then probably camera will shoot straight in every position. If I adjust by looking more up - than I need to adjust a camera. Most probably its a combination on both.

So question to those who mounted camera on top - if you stand or ride - does it actually shoot same angle or different? And if different - then how much?

What you want to do is don your helmet so it's on your head in its normal position, and then mark the mount position so the camera views whatever you look at. Maybe your riding position affects what part of the visor you look through, not sure as I don't ride a sportbike, but I'm guessing not by much. In MSF they always say keep your head and eyes up.

I think he was talking about my pic. Guess I'll find out how secure it is if the mount adhesive ever fails. :laughing

Would any of you consider mounting a Countour on a helmet peak? Do any helmets have enough room to mount it underneath without totally cyclopsing you?

i mounted my contour on my visor. that way if i don't want it anymore, i can just get a new visor instead of having leftover glue on my helmet.

i do not see any part of my helmet in the video, and you can adjust the angle if you want :)

My ContourRoam is mounted on the right side. If I mounted it on the left, it would have blocked the shield vent lever on my RF1100

Wow, top mounting sure seems unpopular. Is this a fashion problem? :laughing

My guess its just harder to put it right and no way to adjust after. I am going to try putting it on top and leash to vent cover.

Also, when will helmet manufacturers wise up and start molding Picatinny rails into the shell? Glue is improvised.

I have it mounted on the right to be compatible with the Quick-Strap goggles.

Same place I have mine mounted and for the same reason. But I hardly ever use it because it gets knocked off all the time by branches. I think it would be even worse on the top.

Done!

Mounted on top, leashed to drilled hole in vent cover.
Did several approaches, marking with a pencil, to find best angle. The very first attempt, made in standing position using laser - as I expected was pointing kind of down when I was sitting on the bike. While adjusting for better view angle in riding position I had to move it more to the back of the helmet.

After all done with adjustment for riding stance - even in standing position it shoots at the decent angle, not bad.

Will shoot a first real video tomorrow, that's too dark now.

Don't think I have a pic of mine mounted, but it's on the right side. I use it that way on the MC, mountain biking and snowboarding (I use the google strap mount for those usually). On my XC MTB helmet, I use the vent strap mount and it's on top, but I still operate it with my right hand. I'm just used to using my right hand to operate it. I've never had a problem with that. I know the throttle and brake are more important than the camera and I can always find some time to turn it on/off; usually just before riding or just after stopping.

Thinking about it, whether you mount it on top or on the side, you'll have to get one direction dead on while mounting. On top. you need to get the up/down right. On the side, you need to get the right/left right. Either takes a little work. But I like having the more flexibility of up/down and yaw (rotation), which you only get mounting the camera on the side. If you mount the cam on top, you're at one end of the yaw(lens rotation) range, which may limit you.

I've also found (mostly while MTBing and snowboarding) that the camera gets smacked by branches and stuff more when it's on top vs on the side.

Lastly, I usually just tether the cam to the mount. I've never had any problem with that at up to 160mph on the track. I did have the camera pop out of the mount on a right side low side where the camera actually hit the pavement (camera, bike and I are fine). The video is a bit odd with the camera swinging around on the tether while I'm picking up the bike and pushing it out of the way LOL. But tethering to something more firm on the helmet isn't a bad idea.

EDIT... realized I had a pic from a recent trackday which shows the camera mounted.

Yeah I ride mostly in a treeless area. But when I ride at Pine Nut, WHACK, WHACK!

Maybe you could McGyver something on the chin bar vent.

Mounting on visor? it should obstruct your view then. Could show a picture?

it's on the flat part of the visor that connects to the helmet. it covers the circle you see in the picture below.

i cannot see the camera when i wear the helmet, and the camera cannot see the helmet when it's on my helmet =)

plus, it has a place to secure the little string so i didn't have to drill a hole or anything.

i dont know, it just makes more sense to me to be able to adjust my camera up and down rather than side to side. (when do you ever need to point the camera to the side while you ride :p)

The mount location was just PERFECT. Its actually a first time when I like something from the very first time. Usually I wish I do better.

Sounds like you already have your answer, but another vote to say "nay" to the peak. I question the rigidity of the peak at speed. The Contour is not happy with any large-order vibrations (you'll get a very wavy picture).

I mounted mine on the side of the helmet, but inverted it (so the 1/4" screw hole is facing up). Here is a shot:

The view of the shield is almost negligible, given by the amount of information provided by what you can see.
