MS Office

Can still open stuff but not make any changes what so ever just fyi.

I just opened a Word document to see exactly what the message says.

"SUBSCRIPTION EXPIRED On June 13, 2016, most features of Word will be disabled".

Expired is an odd word choice considering June 13 isn't here yet. So I guess its just warning me and I have a few days yet.
That's a tablet running Windows 10 but I also a Surface 2 RT running Windows 8 which I believe is the only Surface with free Office for life. I don't use it much so not sure if it will open files from upgraded devices.

Gnumeric is a worthy comparison, but it's subtly different.

Nice, I will try it if I get a chance. I am probably too deeply entrenched in Excel Formula codes to be happy with it, but I like to know options. :thumbup

Use Google docs. Does all that for free, and it's on the cloud and you can access from anywhere.

And for the price of free, google looks at everything you do. They are becoming much like Facepage, in that their business model has become a platform for sharing your information so they can better target you for whatever the buyer of the information wants.

Sell your guns on BARF? I bet google knows. And I bet they'll sell the information that you own guns to whomever wants it...

Just sayin...

(I doubt MS is any better. But you do have the option to not put stuff in the cloud.)

Not to pick nits, but google doesn't really sell your information, they sell access to you. The company says I want my ad shown to motorcyclists from 30-40 who might be interested in a MS office alternative. Google says, oh OK we can run that shit through our database and find some people who fit that advertising profile. They do share ad performance data that is not identifiable. Their whole business model is built on them having that info and not others.

Facepage on the other hand...

Your phone is doing ten times more scary things as well.

I understand the concern, but I don't really care if google knows I type Playstation 4 and shows me a Playstation ad. The services they offer are well worth it to me (Again their business model). I am willing to offer them that, it is done much more maliciously by other companies. :2cents

I dunno. Do whatever works for you. I just picked up the latest version of Office Suite for Windows 10 at Costco for less than $100. No biggie.

I have to do lots of work with court pleadings that get rejected if they're not perfect. Most attorneys are using Word these days and fixing any formatting issues via any other word processing app is a BITCH.
