My dog got attacked yesterday

Of course they don't have "locking jaws", but in the spirit of the post I figured I'd be pedestrian.:teeth

To clarify, I am a long time pitbull(s) owner and have some expereince with the breed, to say Pitbulls have "locking jaws" is a myth! There is nothing unique about the anatomy of their jaws. However, perhaps in their breed and history (bull baiting/fighting) some will hold "lock" with sheer determination. They are powerful dogs and have strong muscles and as a pitbull parent or any other dog owner, we should all know how to break up a dog fight IMO.

Seems like as good a place as any to put this. Hope it becomes more widely adopted.

Do You Know What A Yellow Ribbon Tied On A Dog’s Collar Means?

You should have taken that branch and finish off the owner.

:thumbup

If you know you have an aggressive AND untrained dog then you should NOT have that animal in public. Completely irresponsible owners. I see people like this all the time with small and large dogs and I get very angry because of the danger it puts my dog in and the repercussions of her likely found "at fault" because of her breed.

Stoopid humans.

As an owner and avid lover of rotts, sorry about your situation.
I hate when I see people with big dogs getting pulled every which way. This is my opinion but If you do not have the physical power to pin your dog to the ground, you need another breed. On top of that, just like riding, you need to be aware at all times. I really don't care about what form of training the dog has had, not all surprises come gift wrapped.

How hard is it to purchase a basket muzzle with enough room on the bottom to accommodate jaw drop?

sorry to all you lovers out there but,

his dog attacks my dog and in i go, with knife in hand ready to end the fight right then and there:mad

i would even wait around for the police after I called them.

I'm glad to hear your pup is alright, I dunno what I would have done if that happened to my dog. Well... I usually carry a knife of some sort so I honestly would have used that if my dog was getting mauled...

That's exactly what I was thinking when that chick's 2 dogs were dragging her along when they came after me... if she couldn't physically control them, why did she even take them out where they could potentially hurt someone? I why wouldn't she put a muzzle on them??

I would have stuck the mutt in the liver.

Although i get what youre saying, and i myself loved my dogs as much as i love my kids and would do ANYTHING to protect/save them, id advise against this route. I come from a family that is VERY involved in anything pertaining to pitbulls, aside from fighting them. I/WE CANNOT STAND DOG FIGHTING, however, it is part of the breed. These dogs were born n bred to resist any and all pain n keep going. Unless youre lucky enough to get a kill puncture, youre likely to have an even more enraged beast now zoned in on you. Your punches will do nothing. Your kicks will do nothing. Im not saying youre weak or anything, its just what a pitbull is designed to do/be. My last pitbull i had was 105 lbs and fully protection trained, which is unusual, because pitts can be very hard to "call off".

During training sessions, decoys in full body bite suits, were given permission to punch, kick, or whatever they thought might work to get away, (extreme i know, but he was part of a competing protection dog club) and none of it worked. He was trained to not flinch, stop pursuit, or release even if shots are being fired. (Blanks of course). Obviously i know im comparing apples to elephants right now, im jus sayin, bustin out the knife might make the situation a lot worse. Thats all.

Pepper spray, good idea. "Breaking stick" good idea. Finger in the butt, good idea, it works lije a charm. If carrying a water bottle, pour water in tge snout/mouth of the attacking/locked dog. Makes em think theyre under water n theyll realease.

OP.... glad your dog is ok, honest. Just outta curiousity, when the dogs "greeted" were they nose to nose? Ear to ear? Or nose to ass? Im jus tryin to see if tgere was a trigger, or if tge other dog was goin purely off prey drive?

This is all good information... guess even Pitbulls don't like surprise butt sex... :laughing

I absolutely love dogs. I know many pitbull owners who swear its the owner not the dog, however I hate that breed.
I really do. I have an innate fear of them as I do of snakes and spiders.
I really do not get it. So many awesome types of dogs, yet so many people want as a pet an animal created to be a beast. And then they get surprised when their pet snaps out of the blue and hurts people or cats or dogs.
I really, truly do not get it. In my world pits would be banned as pets. Its just the way I see it.

these are what we use

with a 100# dog it's just too risky to allow a random to come up and free pet her. She's super well trained but has her "ticks". She doesn't like bikes or skateboards... they tense her up/sketches her out. So when kids come up on them wanting to pet her, she's already on edge.

Oh i hear ya, and i wouldn't recommend it either to most people, but i know canine anatomy pretty well from working for a veterinarian for about 4 years. The spleen is a good option too because it's less protected, but a perforated liver will kill it quicker.

I dont even know where to begin.....

1. Pitbulls arent the only breed bred for fightibg/baiting. Numerous other breeds are.

2. Pitbulls, the last study i saw, didnt even rank in the top 5 of most likely to bite/attack.

3. Pitbulls at their very core were bred to be 100% people lovers. Nuetral "judges/handlers" were required in pit fights to ensure no funny business was goin on. Meaning, these dogs needed to be trusted not to attack strangers handling them in the ring. Any dogs that were people aggressive were retired/killed.

4. No dogs "turn". Theres always a trigger. Unfortunately, from centuries of breeding, pitbulls are very, very prey driven. And yes, in the right/wrong situation, it can turn very bad, very quickly.

5. I adore all animals, especially dogs. No breed, no breed at all can compare to the loyalty, drive, and 100% eagerness n drive to pkease their owner to pitbulls.

6. Take away all the bullshit press surroundibg pitbulls, and i gaurantee you would not say or feel what you do.

Lets get rid of all cops since some are evil n crooked. Lets get rid of all blacks since some are evil criminals. Lets get rid of all hispanics since some are lowlife gangbangers. Lets get rid of all asians since some cant drive for shit. Lets get rid of all whites, since some cant dance for shit and eat their murder victims.

I understand we are talkin dogs and not people, but fuck, ill take a dog over 99% of humans any fuckin day!!

I've honestly tried to convince myself that my fear of pits is just based on my own ignorance. The more I looked in to it, the more I researched it unfortunately the more it had proven to me pits should not be owned as pets.
Its a free country, feel free to own them.
I will always do my best to stay away.

Btw I know "Lefty" here on Barf has pits that are like children to him and I've had a similar coworker that had pits as nice as mellow cats.
I still feel it is a russian roulette with that breed and similar ones.
I have no interested what so ever in dogs that were breed for fighting, period.

i know what you mean, sad but both of my girls are gone now, but my molly was 95 pounds when she got sick.
yes both were rotts mix, but from the start training, and just socializing them kept all the bad away.
both of my girls were great gentle around everybody all moly wanted was attention, all of it.

never could understand why anybody could have a dog and not have proper control.
i could just pat my leg and both would stop what they were doing and line up on my side.:teeth
even the dog catcher left us alone, and stockton is a mandatory leash law city.

good dogs are a dream, bad dogs need new people

Hahaha.... no disrespect intended, was just curious if maybe you had a funny/surprising story to tell. Different thread, different time!:cool

I didn't take it disrespectfully! :)
