NASCAR Driver Tony Stewart Runs Over a Guy

Ol' Tony S. is the Roger Clemens of nascar.

The yellow is fresh, guys were just easing out of it and getting sorted out. Ward runs down the track and another car is blocking Stewart's forward view. Its tragic but I don't see any intentional contact.

From what little video evidence we have, I have to agree with this. I think what might have appeared to be him swinging the back end around was him trying to avoid Ward. I haven't watched sprint cars for years, but what I do remember is that they have no differentials so they turn rather abruptly unless the back end is loose. Maybe that's not the case anymore, though; I wouldn't know.

I have always figured Stewart would eventually kill somebody, but not like this. I thought it would be at Talladega or after he was done with Nascar and went back to Indy cars.

Is it common to get out of your car while a race is on going? Confront another driver while his car is moving?

It just seems suicide to do so. Not that a pro driver couldn't control his race car.

Is it possible both drivers were dui impaired. How else could could you take part in such a redneck sport.
Does Rusty Possum still race?

Not a fan of this modern trend of mismatching actions, it's like people are just looking for excuses to kill each other.

After watching this again I have to wonder if there is a history between the two of them, if even just for this one race. Ward seems to be overly pissed off about Tony running wide on the previous lap.

+1

Sad for everyone involved.

How common is this? As common as motorcycle riders chasing down or tangling with 4000 pound cars in traffic related disputes.

Stewie makes no attempt to steer away or stop the car. Actually he takes the inner line and gets on the throttle. Toasted.

Looks to me more like he spotted the guy at the last second and tried to slide the rear wheel out of the line to avoid hitting the guy. For sure no one will be going to jail over this.

It's pretty dark, could he even see him before it was too late considering the car that was in front of him?

I'm not saying it was intentional or not, but I do know two things 1) it was careless for Ward to get out of his car like that although I know they do that shit all the time in NASCAR and 2) together with Stewart's previous anger issues this will most likely end his career.

If the guy on foot were on the inside, that would be more believable.

Tony Stewart runs over a competitor at a dirt track race. Apparently he spins the guy out, the guy gets out of car with track under a yellow flag, guy is mad and walks towards Stewart pointing his finger at him, then Tony Stewart runs him over and they guy winds up face down motionless on the ground.

The clearly audible throttle blip as he hits the guy makes it hard to think it was an accident.

While this is truly a tragic circumstance, your 'conclusion' that the throttle blip you heard was actually Stewart's is impossible to arrive at with any certainty. There were quite a few cars on the track and in between where the videographer was and where the incident happened. It could have been anybody's car.

And what kind of wingnut walks out onto a hot racetrack? Those cars don't exactly turn on a dime on the dirt. The whole premise of dirt-tracking is based upon sliding. Would anybody ever expect to see what amounts to a jaywalker on a hot track?

If it turns out it was intentional, that's one thing. But without a confession by Tony Stewart, it would be impossible to prove this was anything other than a tragic racing incident.

This.

Very sad.

I don't know anything about the other hicks involved in this form of racing but Tony Stewart is legit. We can't even pretend to be able to do what he can in a car. I believe his maneuver was trying to avoid the guy and not to hit him.
Dude should not have been standing on the track, he's dead because of his anger and stupidity.

I'm just saying that when someone is on the outside, you don't slide the ass end to the outside to avoid them. His blip was a FU.

Per the video, car 45 had almost 2 seconds of lead on Stew, and was on the inside line. Stew had a decent line of sight, and at the very last second still could've yanked the wheel to the left and got on the brakes ... instead of getting on the throttle.

As for ending Stew's career, 'Murica loves drama. Michael Vick came back.

The rear of the car slid to the inside away from the Ward but there's a limit to how quickly you can move off line on dirt.
