Newer 5 Gallon Gas Cans - Junk!

You need to reread* what I wrote, you'll be happy you did.

*between the lines

I did but I miss the old days of just buying a gas can with the spout and little pop-top vent in the back.....

I am going to look into the other way but I have learned to deal with CARB specified cans so..........

Nice stuff is still made, you just gotta pay for it. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B003FZB3N0/

Those last forever but leak terribly in the seams in the metal nozzle and they are heavy and awkward to use. I am forced to use 2 of them at a site I teach riding courses... I prefer a motojug. Simple and easy to use and does not leak.

Next time you are in another State, buy the gas cans there and bring them back.

I have ≈20 of them, 4+ years in super hot to super cold and none of the seams burst

I had six gas cans, two of them being the red 5g Tuff Jugs and it was one of these that split and leaked at the seam, but not what I'd call a "burst". Our temps swing close to 80 degrees between summer and winter, excluding whatever it rises to in the shop from thermal runaway.

If you ride dirt, it's been a problem on occasion at the parks. They just roll through the staging areas and make it rain.

I bring at least 2 full jugs to every AFM weekend. I put them in the bed of my truck to keep gas fumes out of the toy hauler, but have never had an issue with them leaking.

:dunno

Are you using that exact pump? I love the idea, but the reviews are less than stellar.

+1 on the race gas cans! Never using conventional cans again, there all trash nowadays.

Don't think they'd ship that VP can to California. The workaround is for the manufacturer to say it's something else, a liquid container or whatever. Can't sell a gas can that's doesn't meet our gas can criteria. Has to be red, no vents, no-spill, etc.

"Move" to Reno via a virtual mailing address and have it shipped there then go pick it up or forwarded to your "old" home address.

Just gonna leave this here. I used one to have a race exhaust and once to buy paint that neither company would ship to CA. Reno's not far and I had wanted to go to Tahoe anyway.

Sorry for the confusion. I don’t have a pump on my jugs, but a friend does have one (not sure if it’s that exact one, but he did buy it on Amazon). He hasn’t experienced any leaks.

Cycle Gear sells race fuel jugs.

Right there's the workaround, it's a "utility jug" used for your "favorite liquid". One person posted in the QA that it says right on it that it's not to be used/sold for fuel.

The online advert says the following also:

This product is legal in California only for racing vehicles which may never be used, registered or licensed for use upon a highway.

OP says he’s using them to fuel his generators during power outages. I don’t see how the lack of CARB compliance would ever be an issue.

Hmmm, I guess you could buy two jugs, the legal red one to take to the gas station and then you could transfer that gas into your renegade jug at home.
