Apologies to the mods if this is the wrong forum to post but I figured I'd get more of a response than the KS.

I am thinking about making the switch from 35mm to SLR digital and was pondering over the Nikon D70. Any owners out there that can provide some feedback?

I would classify myself as a photo hobbyist. No where near a D2x level but past the point and shoot snapshot type. I have happily used a Nikon 8008 over the past ten years but realize that digital is the way to go. I would like to still be able to use my old lenses to some extent so I am thinking about the D70.

don't forget the D100,seen'em go for a
pretty good price on ebay....

great camera! THe d50 is out now and the d70s too. I would look into both of those. www.dpreview.com is a great place to research, i am absolutely in love with my camera and the pics it can take...

Yup the D100 is on the list as well. The D70 brand new is going for 750.00 now.
Tempting ..

750?!that is tempting.i'm waiting for the minolta to drop in price at the end of the year so i just have to be patient.(currently
using minolta AF film camera)....

d70 is superior, even though it's meant to be lesser, it has more technology. Better buffer, better read/write, etc

749.00 for the body only but that is all I need for now. Here is one of a few places with that price.

Also don't forget that there is about a 1.6x difference in the focal length of your old lenses when used with a DSLR. A 1.6x "focal length multiplier" will turn your 28mm lens into a 45 mm, and your 50mm lenses will turn into 80mm lenses.

I want to upgrade from my Nikon N70, to a DSLR too.

Thx for the numbers Sane Man. I knew there was a difference between 35mm and Digi lenses but your post makes it clear.

One other concern I have for the D70 is that it is made in Thailand. I have never been gentle with my cameras and my 8008 has been all over the world and to many Grand Prix races and has never had a problem.

unless your hurting for cash, keep the
8008 as a back-up....

I do plan on keeping the trusty 8008. It was my first "real" SLR and like me, it has been beat up and still keeps on ticking. Lots of memories associated with it. Plus, those cameras on ebay will fetch maybe $150.00 ....better to keep it I think.

:thumbup for the D70. I've got an EOS Rebel, and I kind of wish I waited for the D70 to come out. But Canon has the new Rebel XT out now. It's worth looking into.

I have heard great things about the Nikon D70. Great camera for entry level DSLR. I myself am a Canon person so I have a Rebel 300D and a 20D. I use the 300D for portraits, nature, and mac shots. The 20D for sport shooting and outdoor action.

Regardless of what brand camera you choose (all of them are good) just remember its all about the lense. Camera bodies will come and go but the lenses is something you want to invest your good $$$$ into. Have fun researching and share some of your shots when you get a chance!!

There's a rebate expires tomarrow 6/30 on the D70 Kit.
Basically is the Nikkor 18-70mm f/3.5-4.5G ED-IF AF-S DX Zoom Lens worth $200 extra.
If you don't have any auto focus lenses it might be a good start. Generally Kit lenses are medioker. Heh could put the $200 as downpayment on a good $1500 lens.
Tokina lens are nice alternative tho and $200 Tokina be allot better then a $200 Nikkor.

Agreed.

I love the buffer memory on D70, but definitely check out the D70s, D50, and D100. I shoot events and portraits once in a while... also a track day or two. I know that the D70 or even the D70s would be more than enough for most of my needs. But if you have the dough, why not.

What I would do is walk into one of the shop with your own CF memory card. If you're going to get one anyway, it wouldn't hurt to get one of the 80x 1Gb. CF Card. Take pictures with each of those cameras, high contrast, perspective, low speed, action/multiple-frame shots, run the FPS. Come home, compare the result. :)

Besides the site above, I also go to www.stevesdigicams.com for tech info. He's been pretty good at it.

Here's a little sample of D70 shot resized, the detail is still good and sharp.

Thanks to all for responding and helping me make up my mind. Does anyone have any information good or bad as to the durability of the D70? I'm not hamfisted with cameras but stuff happens during travel.
