Palm Sliders

The theory behind the sliders on the heel of the palm has less to do with protection (slider vs leather) as it does with trying to avoid a tumble. The idea is that it is common for someone to try to brace their fall by putting their hands out during an accident and leather palms could grab the ground and start a tumble (bad). Where as if you put your hands out and have sliders your hands slide potentially avoiding a tumble.

Thank you! I'm not sure why so many don't understand the concept of the sliders.

I don't know how many times you've flown off of a bike, but the few times that I've done it there wasn't even the tiniest bit of my brain power devoted to where my hands were going to be when I hit. All of that was automatic. :x

On dirt I have flown off a few times. Not a whole lot but since that break I had a tumble that ended up being rather uneventful because I tucked and rolled with my elbows instead of hands(my arm was only broken a few weeks earlier so even a minor get off could have been a real bummer if I out my hand out)

But like I said in the first place, it will probably be hard to do anything about in the event of a crash....

More than ten years ago Held was putting "sliders" on the palms of their gloves. I've had three pairs of them that all had these:

My daily drivers are Held Steve gloves. Great gloves with OG Road Warrior sliders.

Here is what I'm rockin'. High velocity gear. Life time guarantee for defects. Half price guaranteed replacement if they get destroyed by any reason (dog chews them up, run it over with lawnmower) if I remember right they are sewn with kevlar thread. Knox spa system to prevent wrist and collar bone Injuries. I love the midevil look but they also have the traditional racer styles too. Multi layers of leather and stainless steel. Since I know some know it all will have to say "metal gets hot during a slide!" Let me assure you all plates and rivets have their own layer of leather which is then sewn onto the glove (second pic).

This is the purpose of palm sliders on gloves:

The goal is to have your hand slide out from under you when it's the first thing to hit the ground. Otherwise the momentum of your body along with the force of gravity is what breaks the scaphoid.

That's the theory at least. Does it work in practice? Just like almost every special feature manufacturers use to sell their safety gear, who knows? Every crash is different.

And as seen in the last frame helps prevent landing on your shoulders and collar bones (clavicle).

Held also puts a layer of Nomex (of course now they probably use something more modern), to prevent the metal rivets from burning your hands under long slides.
