The dirty secret of the MRAPs is we spent a fuckton of money on them, and then the usual war of escalation happened. We just taught a bunch of insurgents how to build a better IED, and they became a lot less effective.

The "bad guys" in the N. Hollywood shootout didn't belong to any of the gangs you are so scared of. So there goes your story. MRAPs are still not needed.

Standard SWAT equipment would have taken care of these guys (and did). Also the tactics taught to LEOs have greatly changed since then and regular patrol officers are way better armed. I know some of the LAPD officers that responded on that day and some of the tactics used were originally devised by LAPD. Were this kind of shit to happen today, the perps would be neutralized way way faster.

Don't take it the wrong way, but it does not sound like you have had much experience looking into urban law enforcement tactics. Try chasing after perps in MRAPs and see how fast you lose track of them. MRAP is a weapon of war, not suitable for Police duties. But you seem to have made up your mind.

Shootouts and stand offs with armed subjects with rifles happen all the time. Go ahead and advance on a barricaded subject with a rifle on foot, I'll be right behind you :laughing

Didn't I already bow down to your superior knowledge and admit that I obviously don't know WTF I'm talking about? What else do you want from me???

fwiw, at one point in my life I went quite far down the road to becoming a LEO and some of the factors that unfortunately made me turn back were the shrinking agency sizes, lack of back-up support and overall mediocre equipment for a crisis situation. I've done plenty of ride-alongs (even been handed keys to unlock weapons 'just in case') and for some of the high crime areas it's almost crazy to be a LEO. Sure, for 99% of the police work you might only need a uniform and a flashlight but for those rare situations when things get serious, I'm all in favor for 'overkill' - it's not like anybody suggested ALL regular patrol cars get replaced with BearCats or other MRAPs but I don't see the big deal about having ONE for a SWAT team - you know, the dudes that get called in when things get serious, not 'AAA with guns' writing speeding tickets.
