Rehabbing the Rescue Van

I saw Gwynnes Pepper at Stonybarf. I can vouch for the windshield being held in place by gravity, or maybe habit.

But it was also the envy of the whole campground. :thumbup It's both tall and short! A tasty, peppery red color. And thrifty, not thirsty!

We found a donor van out in Stockton, I just need to get out there with a sawzall then give little Pepper a lobotomy and a transplant. This has to wait until next year when I can count on it being dry for several weeks. In the meantime, I've ordered a roll of exterior gaffer's tape in red to hopefully cut down on the wind noise :laughing

Next project: HOT WATER :banana

I love this! Subscribing for the fun:thumbup

Jealous, I really want a van / transport vehicle to allow for easier / more dirt time, just not in the cards for me here in SF. That van is looking good already!

Following, I love van builds. Never forget everything takes longer than you think it will. :( The Northern California Fall Van Meetup is on Saturday, November 6th. It is being held at the brand new Dumbarton Quarry Campground in Fremont from 11:30 to 4, with an option to camp! Old Man Brit will be there with his 4x4 MB. I am going over to look around in my Ford Transit. You might get an idea or two on modifications you could do.

Oh thank you!!
The next few weeks will see the van unloved as we have a couple huge projects culminating.

I’m looking at those 12 volt fridge/freezer combos. Water is also the next step we use 25gallon barrels for fine ballasting. I’m thinking one of these with a 6 gallon grey water catch tank will work well. It’s difficult because the ban really is teeny.

Hey Thumper, I have a 3 way fridge you can have if you want it (AC, DC and propane) I picked it up for my van, but we aren't going to use it. Not the coldest, but probably ok for anything not meat. It's about 20x20x20 ish. It's a Norcold 3 way reefer. I've only tried AC, previous owner ran propane and told me it will suck a battery dry quickly in DC.

Matty , thank you! Barf is awesome!

Thanks for the links Bill! Rabbit holes, how do they work? :rofl

Love this, G!!!! Cannot wait to see in person.:love:love

Hot water in the van is going to be a game changer.

I will have some updates tomorrow. I got the water heater installed and I am attempting to build a storage system for the assorted hoses and pump that goes with the system.
I took the van down to Souther California this weekend for an event. It performed well but certainly has some gremlins. I need to replace the passenger headlamp harness amongst other things. Mercedes regardless of how they are branded have always had socket issues.

As I said earlier with this van there will be many more "your bike on location" opportunities.

A little delinquent with this update. Water heater is installed on back door of van! :party.
The lower hold down releases to allow the unit to swing level regardless of incline.

For now the hoses reside in a plastic tote. My neighbor is a master craftsman/ finish carpenter. He suggested that I buil;d a box (it will be crude! :laughing) so as to prevent anything being stowed that will interfere or damage the water heater.

This little van is a 2500, the more stuff I load into it, the quieter it gets. This leaves me with the thought that I'd like to have 20+ gallons in a tank. I'm thinking a barrel would work but I will need to fill it in place with a hose. The takk water would be strickly for showers and dishwashing. I found this super groovy nifty little battery operated pumpo that fits over a 5 gallon bottle of water. Using this I can refill the jug and wrestle it into place. My coffee water must be pure!!!!
