That's the same argument that an alcoholic would make about what constitutes "drunk".

i wouldnt know, im not an alcoholic, nor drink and drive/ride.

i thought we were talking about MJ. can we stay on topic?

pretty sure they have completely different affects.

I think its a pretty reasonable question. A lot of people do it, i even know experienced track riders who are 40+ years old that take a hit before a track day, just to calm their nerves.

Never seen anybody in this area take a hit during a trackday...thankfully! I can't imagine who would do that, but it doesn't surprise me. Drugs effect everyone differently. I get giggly and affectionate if I have a few too many drinks--I know other people get aggressive or depressed. Some people seem to ride fine with one or two beers under their belt. If I have a half a brew my balance and reactions are affected. I'm not good enough a rider to compensate, so I don't touch anything when I'm on the bike. Tried it once or twice and figured it out before getting the hard lesson. ...I know some people who seem to do things better while under the influence of certain drugs, marijuana being one of them. Can't say that that's going to be the norm though.

It is not great to be BLOWN out of your mind while riding but a little blazed is fine, depending on how technical the riding is.

I made some special brownies a few weeks ago for the first time and tried them out after work. I got a small head change and was a little disspointed, so i went for a ride. Halfway into the ride the brownies actually hit me really hard and I was so blown i wasn't even having fun so I just went home and enjoyed the high while not riding.

The edibles hit ya when ya least expect it and with authority !! :wow

:laughing

I personsally wouldnt endorse riding under the influence of anything and I must admit I rode throught the seventies and eighties pretty stoned and frequently drunk also never crashed never had a dui that was some fricking dumb luck. Even our proposition 215 passed by the voters in 1996 known as the medical marijuana law states that no one should be driving under the influence. I know from my past experience that use of marijuana effects people differently. Some may ride or drive fine under the influence others not so good and ones tolerence to the substance could be a major factor. I would also offer that when you make the judgement its not affecting you you are under the influence so your judgment could be suspect what seems fine to one under the influence may not be the same thing a sober observer is seeing. In any case its illegal to ride under the influence and if an officer suspects you are under the influence a test will be requested and the penalties are the same a dui is a dui it has long lasting issues on your insurance and driving record. Alcohol tends to make me drive or ride more agressivly if I over due it smoking tended to make me much more mellow and less likely to do anything agressive. Since there is a good possibility the voters of our state will vote for legalization of marijuana next year this a definitly a relevant question and one deserving of further research. We have all seen shows where drivers are allowed to drink under the supervison of a police officer then try to negotiate a coned off course at different levels of intoxication I'd like to see the same thing happen with marijuana for comparisons sake.

Actually not really.. Although they both act through different chemical methods, they both impair balance, vision, judgment, reaction times, and memory..

Basically all of the reasons why driving while under the influence is illegal.. And its why you can catch a DUI charge drinking OR smoking..

In fact, trying to separate the two is a much more difficult argument than lumping them together when it comes to safe operation of motor vehicles.

The research has been done, a couple times. The findings are consistent: Smaller amounts make safer drivers, yes, safer! Larger amounds affect reactions and judgement.

The studies you refer to a) involved cars not bikes and b) didn't say the people were better drivers, it said they were safer for reasons such as a lower likelihood of speeding and/or overreacting. Not much relevance to riding a moto, where the ability to process visual cues quickly and effeciently and have very good motor control can be key to saving your life (and maybe someone else's). Marijuana in no way improves your vision, processing speed, or motor control. You may think it does when you're high, but that's because you're high.

Riding impaired by drugs or alcohol is simply irresponsible, however you try to rationalize it. Doesn't shock me at all that a large number of people do it, as this country is full of irresponsible people who lack the proper respect for the well being of their fellow citizens.

riding under the influence of anything is pretty much on topic.

;)

yeah, a beer sitting behind the computer I dont notice the effects at all. Same amount and ride and it feels like im going to hurt myself.

You may think it does when you're high, but that's because you're high.

I assume you don't get high? Also, I didn't say better, I said safer.

I dunno about other people, but I can tell when I'm high, and how much it affects me. Plenty of people out there sober every day that have little clue about how well they drive or ride, as proven by the many mishaps they have.

Stoned/sober trained/untrained All that really matters is whether or not you are actually on top of the situation at hand.

All of the things that MJ impairs can be resolved by driving more conservatively...or do you really think that grandma and grandpa out there in the Delta 88 have decent reflexes?

To be clear: I never said anything about MJ improving anything...the studies that showed safer driving, just showed that people seemed to realize they were in control of 1.5 ton death machines, unlike their usual oblivion.

Which really just goes to show how much traffic safety is about judgment, and not skill.

Exactly!

Now go ahead and complete the argument that MJ doesnt affect judgement.

Ok, thanks, I will:

It does affect judgment, that is the point. It makes you more conservative. Unlike alcohol, which makes you uninhibited.

So then the difference between the two, and how people tend to drive under the influence of each, is obvious.

Oh booze, you can drive hella fast WooHoo!!!!

On weed, we better be careful, there could be cops, plus, I don't want to miss the turn for the fast food place...

I still wouldn't recommend it to an inexperienced moto rider...nervous and paranoid is good when you're looking out for cops and bad car drivers, not so much when you're trying to be coordinated with the controls as you merge into freeway traffic for the first time...

I was going to quote a few idiotic quotes. But this will do.
You are delusional.

I will explain by example:

I ran a number of music shops for CBS. My BEST employee (assistant) was a heavy dope smoker. (A VERY smart guy). I was concerned about his smoking during work hours, BUT I said that he could go ahead UNTIL he failed at his duties. HE came to me after a rough day and said, "You were right, I will never smoke dope again at work or before I come to work." That was working in the frucking MUSIC business. He was not EVEN riding a motorcycle.

Oh, and BTW, I have had more than one doctor tell me that I should be dead or insane from all the drugs that I did, many, many years, ago.

So, if I can get it, anyone else can get it. Pot is NOT better than any other mind altering drug. It slows your reactions and ALTERS your perceptions.

re

:twofingerits peoples choice what they do,smoke weed or not,
me myself i run 2 medical cannabis clubs i wouldn't do it myself i think it makes you silly and you dont have your head rite maybe thats just me,but its the same as drinking and driving, its a persons choice
