I only get REALLY high if I have my kids on the bike with me, does that make me a bad person, who are you to judge, maybe my kids are punks. :twofinger

My favorite thing to do is get high while I drop bags of used oil on off ramps.....

You know, there might be a reason why you are a magnet for shit jobs and bad customers..

You misinterpreted what I wrote.

Shit jobs = hard cases, that other techs would rather avoid, or that the manager knows I will end up with anyways.

Bad customers = People who are angry, often because another tech was not professional, technical, or aggressive enough to resolve the issue already. Now not only do I have to resolve a tech issue, I also need to get this customer excited about our products and service again. Big picture, you gotta see the big picture.

I notice that some other techs, stoned or not, are more interested in getting done with their call, or day, and just aren't aggressive enough about understanding the issues that happen, and why, as that is always related to either the structure of the product and it's data flows, or the way that customers interact with the product.

They just want to get through their day...for me, I need to know WHY and HOW everything happens. Not just everything in my work, everything in the world...but applying that to my work helps me knock out cases, so I can go back to reading wikipedia, trying to know and understand everything...everywhere.

Now, I know I'll never get there, and I'm sure pot is holding me back and slowing me down. But it isn't like my hunger for information does much for me anyways, other than making it somewhat easy to hold down a tech job so that I have constant internet access throughout my workday...as that is why I work in the industry in the first place.

I have met many people who didn't have the brain cells to spare to be doing any drugs...often they not only smoke, but they drink too, something I rarely do...that stuff messes you up man. :thumbup

It's just like riding. You really need to know yourself, and your limits, and work within them. Oh crap, I've been awake for like 45 minutes already! I gotta go smoke!

What about caffeine? Is that to say all riders who drink coffee and say it keeps them alert are just "rationalizing their addiction?"

Touché

Ok so maybe that was a little bit too much of a generalization... I've had this argument before..... Although that time it ended with a sharing of the proverbial "peace pipe" and then watching Vanilla Sky for the first time..... "Techhh Sssuuppppporttt!!". :shocker Yah.. That was fun..

This time I am rewarded with having to mow my lawn... Wee

Cheyanne - I Obviously don't know your exact situation and I'm not trying to throw stones here (no pun intended).. I'm just saying I've been on the other side of your equation.. That guy thought he functioned as good or better when baked than sobor.. From my perspective, as his boss evaluating his performance, no way... But I lliked the guy a lot and kept him around as long :wtfas I could... He would get into this same debate with me time and time again..

But when handing out general advice to riders... Without knowing my exact audience... I like to keep that advice at the level of your average, everyday warning sign... You really think that a person who has to be told the coffee is hot, or don't climb into the polar bear's cage at the zoo can handle interpriting advise / opinions like "yah smoke weed and ride"!!

I can't say much about this on a public forum,

But smoking weed is best left until you get home!

Same as with Beer drinking.

Especially with todays hybridized train wreck pot!

Did my share of bad judgement calls when I was younger and I was lucky.

I'm not aganst people smoking it and such, but it's best left at home for after work or riding!

I wonder how many people that are against smoking and riding actually smoke? I would say that their opinions really don't fly if indeed they don't smoke at all.

I smoke daily and been doing so for years. I started out not smoking at all if I was riding because I was new to it. Now that I have more experience I will smoke alittle before a ride but I really try not too as I don't want get pulled over and screwed by a cop. I find it mellows me out, makes me less agressive, I am more in the zone and aware of what is around me, and I don't do as much stupid shit as I would without being stoned.

From all these posts it seems like most people think smoking a little bud is like downing a six pack and going for a ride.

How many people do you think are stoned when you go cruising by them on your motorcycle? Are they the ones to do crazy manuevers on the freeway and surface roads? I don't really think so.....

I guess what I am trying to say is that weed is so minor on the list of No No's that it is barely a blip on most folks radar.

Anyone who says they can ride 'well' while stoned, is clearly full of shit.

I too am a fairly "seasoned" daily stoner and a daily motorcycle rider. I don't want to get into the argument of whether it's ok to ride stoned or not, as IMO it's a personal preference/responsibility decision one should make for himself.

A few practical notes from my own experience, though.

1) Do not ride when you're wasted. With pot it's easier than many other drugs/alcohol since the peak passes pretty quickly, and generally it's easy to assess the condition you are in. If you don't feel like you should be riding, DO NOT. Give it 15-30 minutes.

2) If you are riding stoned, you are probably too tense. Relax. Play with the bike a little. Get comfortable.

3) If you are riding stoned, you MUST constantly remind yourself to keep the attention on the road. It can be too easy for the mind to drift off...

4) In places like San Francisco, riding stoned may give you major chills. Dress warmer than usual.

Also... One beer makes me a much worse rider that a spliff. Alcohol affects the ability to control the bike much more than a puff of smoke, and most definitely makes one do stupid shit more so than pot. I (almost) never ride if I had more than one drink, but even one is one too many, really. For me, anyway.

And actually yes, I am saying that all chronic pot smokers live out their lives at an impaired level.. That is not a fallacy as any chronic drug abuse absolutely will diminsh your capacity to some degree...

Yeah, especially the capacity to argue with such statements. Sure... Whatever...

Thanks for understanding my point. And i do agree with your last paragraph. I'm kind of glad so many people voted on "riding high is a horrible idea" just to set a good example for new riders. I didn't even think about smoking before riding until i had a year or riding experience under my belt. Even after that point i was really cautious about my intake, and the effect it had on my riding. I found that i was able to operate the motorcycle correctly and safely. I think the ability to practice that type of judgment is really whats important in the long run.

Absolutely. Anyone who says "Anyone who says they can ride 'well' while stoned, is clearly full of shit." is just making a generalization about weed, which i can understand, since our culture sheds an unfair light on marijuana smoking. But i don't expect these people to understand what I'm talking about, and their opinion on this matter is worthless. Of course people who think marijuana is "The Devil's Weed" are going to think stoned motocycle riders can't even see the yellow line in front of them. These people totally negate the actual effects of marijuana and just toss them into the same category as any other drug, mostly because of their bad experiences with junkie friends or relatives.

IMHO the bottom line is: The judgment is in your hands. Our ability to judge each situation per our own knowledge and experience is what helps to turn us into a skilled rider.

If you are the type of rider who wants to educate himself to the highest level on the mechanics of bikes, how/why people crash, riding techniques, the effects of drugs on their body when they ride, you will most likely be okay. This type of rider could potentially smoke a j before a ride, get WAYY too stoned for his own comfort and just stop, per his ability to have good judgment.

If you are the type of rider who exercises poor judgment, doesn't know/care how bikes work, doesn't care about proper riding techniques, and just ignorantly operates his motorcycle every day you are screwed no matter what.

Weed, or no weed. Alcohol or no alcohol. If you are the type of person who exercises bad judgment as a whole you need to stop riding period.

First of all, I'd like you to define what "chronic" is in regards to usage. Second of all, if you measure "capacity" as in function within everyday life and or a career, I know quite a few very successful people who function at a high level of decision making and probelm solving while getting stoned every day of their life.:smoking

I don't know your level of experience as a rider and have never ridden with you but you do seem to be new here. I would wait a while around this place(on BARF that is) before dispensing advice with such a strong hand.:dunno

These are some great tips :thumbup Right on.

I really like the 1st point you made. Since pot is relatively such a weak drug, the combination of adrenalin/wind in your face/ loud noises usually retards your stoned state after about 20 minutes. Its really hard to just zone out and be a stoned zombie when you are sitting on a motorcycle that being hurled down the road at 60mph.

also, if you're that stoned, why ride? Lay back and enjoy the high. at that point you are in no hurry anyway ;)
