A youth rider in one of the support races for today’s Red Bull Indianapolis GP was killed after he crashed on a warmup lap.
Peter Lenz, 13, Vancouver, Wash., was taken to Methodist Hospital with what Indianapolis Motor Speedway medical director Geoffrey Bellows termed “traumatic injuries” in a news release.

Lenz was competing in USGPRU, a U.S.-based motorcycle racing series.

He crashed during warmups for the 250cc race, the first of the day.

After he fell from his motorcycle, Lenz was hit by another rider.

Although the Indianapolis Motor Speedway has not officially announced Lenz's death, the Star's newsgathering partner WTHR (Channel 13) has confirmed it through its sources.

The USGPRU is a series for riders ages 12 to 18, meant as a feeder system for motorcycle racing at higher levels.
But their races are not typically held in conjunction with MotoGP events, and Indianapolis Motor Speedway officials declined to comment about holding this event at one of the world's most historic tracks, the Associated Press reported.

MotoGP officials say rider Peter Lenz has sustained "traumatic injuries" after crashing during a warmup lap for a 250cc race at Indianapolis on Sunday.

After falling, Lenz, a 13-year-old rider from Vancouver, Wash., appeared to be run over by Xavier Zayat of Flushing, N.Y.
Medical workers placed Lenz in a neck brace, put him on a stretcher and appeared to be doing chest compressions. Series officials said Lenz had been transported to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis and that there would be updates on his condition later Sunday.

There was no immediate word on Zayat.

The crash briefly delayed the start of the 250 race. The 125cc race, scheduled for noon, started on time.

I just saw the press release mentioning he was critically injured on the warm up lap. So sad. I always read his column and the kid was so into it. Always scared me a little. I feel so sorry for his family and what they must be going through today.

Godspeed Peter Lenz

Elena's good friend Peter Lenz passed away this morning from injuries suffered in warm up lap crash at Indy during the Moriwaki Cup Race. Words cannot truly express how sorry we are for the loss of such a wonderful, kind, caring and respectful of a young man Peter was. We are just besides ourselves right now.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Lenz's.

We will not forget you, Peter.
