Run? Swim? Bike? It's the Triathlon / Multisport thread!

Anyone else have an issue with salt water? Really want to do more tri's, but there are not any fresh water swims in San Diego and every time I get in the ocean the salt makes me want to puke.

And I just picked up a Garmin 310XT, I need to test it :D

In the last year i have ran a few half marathons. Mountain bike almost every weekend

Planning on attemping a 70.3 by the end of 2013

Looking for people to train with.

*bump*

Who is doing Wildflower this year?
I've done both Oly and Long course twice each. Signed up last year but ended up not going (sick/no training). So trying again this year.

Excuses

The Mountain Bike is only a ¼ mile swim. A blind women with her seeing eye dog did it.

That was my first and only Tri so far. I can't swim well, I never swam in a lake before (other then playing as a kid or wake boarding), and I didn't have a wet suit. I used a hybrid mountain bike that was given to me.

I mountain bike every sat. Running 4 miles a few times a week.

I have no swiming training. I can swim, just have no form.

I would like to try to swim that distance before I attempt it.

Doing the Olympic on Sunday. 1st time at that distance and will be my second tri. Looking forward to a training camp in April so I can see the whole course.

Entered both Olympic and Mountain bike last night and ordered my wet suit. Time off for the week has been approved.

How long should I train before I DECIDE to enter my first tri. I havent run or biked in a bit but am in decent shape. Shoot for June Tris?

Where do you live in the east bay? I'm going for my first and looking for people to train with

I would say that is up to you. I signed up for the Wildflower mountain bike last year on a whim. My mom and her friend volunteer at the event and ask my wife and I to join for a little vacation. I figured I'm already there, I should try it out.

I can swim, but not well. I dog paddled a lot in the swim part. I only trained in the pool a handful of times. I have always been comfortable on a bike so I knew that wouldn't be an issue (even riding a hybrid bike), and I knew I could run. So I did it.

I never regret trying something and doing poorly, I always regret not trying.

I'm in Danville. I haven't ridden my bike in bit nor ran. Being doing more spin bike work at the gym. Stepping it up lately.

I'm in castro valley. Just over the hill.

Running Tuesday and thursdays. Mountain biking on sat mornings. Will add long Sunday runs soon. I hit the gym few times a week. Just started training for the year. Ran a 5K Sunday. My runs right now are about 5 to 6 miles.

May I suggest doing the Tri For Fun series at Shadows Cliffs Park in Pleasanton - short distance and non-competitive. Or if you're more willing, the California Sprint Tri, also at Shadow Cliffs, but a little longer distance. Fun Stuff :thumbup

The wildflower sprint (mountain bike) tri was my first one way back in 1992, and I did that on a whim.
I think I started, "training" some time in april... maybe march. :rofl after a "health nut" female friend said those infamous words... "I bet I could beat YOU"

I think the swim is always the hardest for anyone who hasn't swam much. It's an exercise that uses ALL the muscle groups, AND requires you to control your breathing. That's REALLY hard for a newbie.

So I just did the backstroke, when I could no longer do a freestyle. Easy cheesy... sort of. (if you call gasping for air easy!:p)

After that, The mountain bike was relatively easy. I hauled azz on the dirt downhill!.... and then got caught by my epic speed with a sharp right hander low side. Still have a couple faint scars on my hand from that... (Well, chicks dig scars right?:thumbup) But I did the polite thing, as I rode the loop back up the courses' incline, and warned all the riders I was passing about that rather sharp blind turn. (I think the road rash on my entire right side did more convincing than I did)

After that, the run was pretty mellow! I got some side stitches about a mile through, so I spent the rest of it in a walk/run state. (I know more about hydration needs these days)

All in all, I had a blast! I think I still my event T-shirt.
And yes, I beat the girl. In fact I placed in the top third overall (some 600 entries iirc. she was more midpack)

You say you're in decent shape? DO IT!!!!!!!
(my ace in the hole, was the fact that I worked at a feed store. I'd hand move and load 5-6 tons of feed everyday)

(edit: LOL! I just saw the course map... and the warning sign right where I biffed it! hahaha)

I think some elites race it now as a warm up to the Olympic. The times the winners had were impressive.

Let me step my running game up for a week and I'll touch base. Training with someone would really help keep me focused.

Did a 6 mile trail run Friday. Did the lake Chabot bike loop Once sat, Once sun.

got 32 miles in running / mountain biking over the weekend.
