Running over a fire hose--can a bike do it?

It's illegal, if that matters to you.

CVC 21708. No person shall drive or propel any vehicle or conveyance upon, over, or across, or in any manner damage any fire hose or chemical hose used by or under the supervision and control of any organized fire department. However, any vehicle may cross a hose provided suitable jumpers or other appliances are installed to protect the hose.

uhh ... yeah !

Seems like a serious safety issue for the firemen if their hose gets damaged. I'll be damned if I'll be driving or riding across one.

Sounds like you did the right thing. Otherwise it seems everything has already been said, so I'll just shut up. :laughing

It doesn't particularly matter, but it helps justify my being a chicken about it. :laughing

You can ride over one no problem, but I don't know if it's legal.
Unlike starting a thread about Kim Kardashian, you can't do that here.:x

About 10 years ago, I was northbound on Leavenworth and ran into a bunch of traffic. I split up to the front and found a firetruck blocking off most of the intersection at Geary with a full hose running perpendicular to my direction. A fireman saw me, looked around, pointed at the small open space then motioned for me to go ahead. I stood on the pegs, took it straight on at around 10 mph and went on my merry way. I was riding a Bandit 600 and had no problem at all.

Done it a couple times, just go slowly. There is no harm that the hose rolls, if your front wheel cannot gain traction to going over, the hose just moves forward against your tire. As soon as the tire catches due to lack of slack, just gas it. It's like going over a steel pipe.

As driving over a fabric-covered hose grinds road-dirt into the jacket, AND people's lives are on the other end of that high-pressure line, I personally think that it is a Bad Idea to drive anything over a fire hose - but that's just my opinion.

Sure, they can be tricky to negotiate, but not nearly as difficult as a pissed-off fireman !

Okay, now we know that it's illegal to run over a firehose.

But she didn't ask that, she asked if it was possible to ride a motorcycle over one. What other directions can this thread take now? :laughing

Personally for me it would depend on what bike I was riding. If I was riding my KTM 690 SMC at the time, no big deal. But my sport bike might have given me a reason to chicken out.

Side note, I didn't realize it would be illegal, but good to know for future reference.

well if you can ride up a curb and I have many times you should be able to ride over a fire hose.

^ Similar only in size, but I'd say a fire hose would be more akin to rolling over a log, since being round and able to move would be a factor.

Not the same as log. A hose is not going to roll around. It might move slightly but not like a log would.

I haven't ridden up a curb on the Monster. I have it pretty low and the header drags on speed bumps, so I'd be hesitant to try up a curb. I've ridden off of curbs plenty though and that's not a problem. I probably chicken out at anything over 6" though. That's just getting a little tall.

The hose did roll quite a bit when the towncar rolled onto it. It didn't give much either--it sort of dented with the car's weight on it, but it didn't go flat like a garden hose. Few of us were wanting to turn left, as the fire action and bridge traffic were that direction. I didn't get a chance to see who else drove/rode over it. I was the only bike in a position to ride over it though. The other motos could (and did) ride around it.

Even my Harley can to this. Have to hit it perpendicular though.:wow

You did the right thing, the right way, That's the main thing. :thumbup

Truth. I would have probably ridden over it because I would of thought it was fun...and then been a jerk because I didn't know it was illegal. (despite common sense saying don't ride over a firehose ya moron) :laughing

Sounds like you rode around, and looked like a badass doing it :thumbup:laughing
