School me: AWD, mid SUV, mid to high end, good mpg

Curious what you'll choose.

From what I've seen here so far, I'm leaning to Rav4 Prime (or closest suitable Lexus), or Holeshot's TourX suggestion. There's a lot to be said for a more traditional wagon like that vs an SUV/CUV.

I don't see the need for you to personally attack me :rofl

My friend in Miami has had great luck with his used GLK350 not sure of the year but he's had it for at least six years IIRC.

Drives from Orlando to Miami and vice versa every two weeks and has done that for the past 4 years or so.

30+mpg on the highway with his wife and two Labradors.

Oh, and their African Blue parrot.

Even though the hatred for working on vans is very deep seeded with me (get enough of those with tons of trash, debris, and strange substances all over the doghouse and carpet and see if you like them anymore)…I might make an exception and own that thing. Uncle Rico’s van is almost as legendary as the A-Team van.

Tell us. How deep is the money pit you’ve dug for yourself?

spoiler alert…there isn’t the grand prize of “well sorted solid car” at the bottom because the trick is that there is no bottom.

Lol

When the new director of EH&S came on board at my old company and saw our solar salespeople each had one of those in their car, he flipped out and made them all turn them in and threw them in a dumpster.

The salespeople we're pissed, they loved them.
Stupid salespeople.

when properly extended and locked in position i have no doubt they're plenty safe.

however, it is Very Easy to inadvertently leave one of the little retractable clippy things partially engaged and start climbing. I knew what to look for and nearly did it more than once

Breaking Rob's rule.

No euros.

2X broken. The TourX is a rebodied Opel, to boot!

Can you throw a football over those mountains?

I'm laughing so hard at the pic!!!! Awesome!

Ahahaha! I got stung for $6K on the 30K mile S8 my GF is driving. I figured "30K. What could possibly go wrong?". Found out. Fluid filled A-arms and brakes. Ffffuuuuu. NEVER. AGAIN. (till I lie to myself again)...

Yeah...it's like landing on Boardwalk with a hotel. Euro cars...ugh.

Honestly not that bad. B8 SQ5 (2014) that turned over 90K a couple weeks ago.

FCP Euro has an oil change package that's about 90 bucks shipped, second oil change is coming up before too long. I COULD be that guy and return the used oil / filter because they have lifetime warranty on everything including fluids but I'm not that bothered for what amounts to be about 50 bucks.

I bought an oil/fluid extractor but I'll keep that so I don't really count it as operating costs.

$975 for front and rear brakes. Pads and rotors.

Bought an OBD2 thingy for like 50 bucks.

That's basically it so far. Realistically though I probably won't have it for more than another year or so, kid started driving so I'm going to reshuffle vehicles and get somethin cheap for awhile.

Forgot about FCP. Thanks Mike...off to get a filter.

You needed a new one for that car? For the BMW car I bought last year, I had to buy my third ODB2 thing. I have an old OBD2 scanner, and an OBD2 dongle & app for my BMW bike. And now I have a new app & new OBD2 dongle for the BMW car.

For such a game-changing standard, it doesn't seem so standard anymore.

to be fair I didn't own one, so

oh I also had to get tires, and the SQ5 has wacky sized 21s but the internet figured out you can go up a size and there's an off brand of 265/55/21s that are only like 650 bucks.

overall I'm not into it that much for maintenance or upkeep and it's SUPER fucking nice for being 8 years old.
