Scooter vs Jogger

only scooter I've ever ridden had "pretend" brakes. If you follow my drift...he may not have been able to put on Emergency Braking? Brakes no workie.

The pedestrian was a moron, simple.

SF seems especially full of them, especially in Chinatown, especially old ladies.

I agree with others that jack rabbit starts at any intersection, especially one that has yet to fully clear, are asking for trouble.

That being said the scooter rider probably saved her from being creamed by a larger vehicle.

Most scooters have the engine located far rearward, directly over the rear wheel, they stop pretty good honestly. They aren't fast and they aren't heavy. Front brake is crap though.

Unrelated bonus: with the weight so far rearward, scooters wheelie nicely.

If you ride motorcycles and/or scooters and/or bicycles in San Francisco or any other cities and you don't EXPECT this kind of ped behavior:

You are going to end up on the ground.

But at least you can say it was their fault and you'd be mostly correct. If you can still talk that is.

That doesn't make sense. Emergency braking situations requires emergency braking. That's kinda why it's called 'emergency braking.'

Think of all the times you've had to grab the brakes unexpectedly, it's part of riding.

Didn't think of it until today, but I just remembered one time I was riding a 100cc two-stroke scooter (really good acceleration from such a light two-stroke) in Shibuya, Tokyo. The auto traffic was at a dead stop (oh hi Tokyo) and a risk-taking girl decided to cross the street in the middle, not at the crosswalk.

I come lane-splitting up through the autos, minding my own business, in the middle of a six-lane street, nowhere near a crosswalk so the odds of seeing a pedestrian should be nil. And yet magically a pedestrian appears, stepping out from in front of an auto that's stuck in traffic. I hauled on the binders like crazy and avoided her, I think she actually screamed little bit in fear. Definitely scared me, it was almost like a prank video where someone lies in wait then jumps out at the last second, that's how close it was.

Emergency braking example, really.

That's different. The pedestrian here was definitely at fault, but the rider could have reacted differently. And blind spots at intersections should *always* be a big red flag.

I don't think that is correct.

Link?

He's been very courteous lately with generally helpful posts IMHO. :thumbup

One of the RIP threads. He maligned the deceased's riding ability after being asked not to countless times.

As for emergency braking, this scooter rider was not even in alert mode.

I would have recognized the bus is blocking my visibility and accelerate right when the bus clears the intersection.

I would have throttled cautiously and expect a dumbass jogger to dart out.

Then when I applied emergency braking, it would be effective.

If the Scooter was an SUV she'd have been killed.

She was a complete dumbass.

Fuckin'-A! :party

She should thank him for not riding a Goldwing.

Should the whole block thank him for not being driving a lorry full of explosives that could've detonated on collision and blew a crater in the city?

Hyperbole aside, and while the pedestrian seems at fault, let's not glorify somebody for being in a collision.

Of course, DUH!!! :party

Dude did absolutely nothing wrong and I'd bet 99% of the people posting in this thread would have been unable to avoid that accident if put in that same situation (save for Lou of course). She made a big mistake, she paid for it. End of story.

:laughing

Considering I said he was in error as well I don't think I'm glorifying him or his riding.

She put herself in harm's way but so did he.

I think everyone is missing the most important lesson here, tho... had he gone FASTER, he'd have missed her! But he was on a slow-ass scooter. Moral of the story is... fast bikes save lives. Also, do burnouts at stop lights so you can hook up better for faster launch. Practice your launches for maximum safety.
