Singling out the McDonalds is bush league and going for the low-hanging fruit. Haight St has always been a mess. If Herrera wanted to do something he'd flush out the entire eastern portion of GG Park. Of course, that wouldn't be PC so he goes after "the big corporation" instead and makes it look like he's doing something when he's actually not.

Whats the big deal? City law enforcement agencies crack down on nightclubs, motels and other establishments all the time that encourage or condone illegal behavior. Why should a fast food restaurant be any different?

According to the letter, the police have received 1,100 calls since Jan. 2012 for everything from drug sales, fights, assaults and auto burglaries at the store.

Sounds like McD is doing their part by calling the cops when there are issues. What exactly is McD supposed to do to fix the drug problem?

SFPD is telling McDonalds that is located on Haight to clean up their act. Basically imo SFPD can't seem to get their shit together and deal with the drugs/crime in that area and are blaming McDonalds. The sad thing is that there is a police station and parking lot right across the street.

What say you barf?

Dude, that joint has been a den of scum and villainy at least since I used to buy acid there like 25 years ago. I reckon at a certain point you have to expect a business to handle itself more responsibly for the community or shut it down as a nuisance.

This is definitely Big Gubment messing in the affairs of ordinary corporations who simply want to have to do something on the side! :laughing

Let's say this is the responsibility of both parties, to say the least.

So close it down and do that with it... fence it off so its an eyesore?

Or demo the building and make it so there is no more outside seating?

this is a PD problem. the city can clean it up too

I wonder which developer is looking to turn it into condos over ground floor retail?

That place has been a pit for decades, why do something now? :laughing

I'm curious as to what exactly McDonald's could be doing differently to deter an entrenched population of undesirables. Charge $10 for a burger to price them out? :dunno

Is it the chicken nuggets making the dirty hippies go crazy? I don't think so. As others have been saying, that end of Haight and the beginning of the park there have been a haven for the drug dealing dirty hippies since at LEAST the early 90's.

It should be cleaned up for sure, but that's a job for SFPD, not grimmace and the hamburgler.

Agree to a large part. Some history. I've gone there since it opened for breakfast burritos. It's got a large parking lot and lots of places to sit. It has always attracted hippies, bums, druggies, and low life looking for a place to sit to cadge change and sip coffee. The bathrooms are the most convenient for the park (SF don't supply 24 hour pissers) so they get a lot of use, and Mickey D has been very tolerant of them. In this case, they're shooting themselves in the foot, cuz all Mickey D will do is call SFPD and ask them to enforce vagrancy, truant, and littering laws. I have some sympathy. The Haight has always attracted some real leeches.

Dirty hippies?? :rofl

Brohams.. the McD parking lot has brosephs from all over the bay area coming over with Chevy Impalas to deal.

It's a bit different demographic.

It's possibly related due to the fact that a uniform-clothed security guard OF the store Across the street (!) was stabbed a few months ago?

That being said, the following is a good point... :
I'm curious as to what exactly McDonald's could be doing differently to deter an entrenched population of undesirables. ...

But then again, like I said, the store across the street has a security guard .. actually two for some time after that event.

If there's so much drug dealing right there, then SFPD should thank McD's for giving them an easy enforcement target. What ever happened to the concept of arresting criminals that are right under your nose?

Ever since I was a kid I have visited that McD. I also lived very close to it for 12 years. During these times I have never seen that place as nice, not because it is McD but because of the location. Anything that is there is going to attract the park people. I remember a few years ago they got rid of the dollar menu in an attempt to remove all the homeless in the area.

IMO if the city has an issue with it then the city needs to get SFPD to start cracking heads. This isn't the fault of a business at all because they are not enabling anyone. Should we go after city hall for all the crackheads that hang around there? What about all those stores on 6th and market/mission area? Are they responsible for the problem? We should totally go after those rehab places and good for nothing churchs that hand out free food.

That just isn't true. As Eric previously mentioned, they crack down on Nightclubs for this sort of stuff much more often. If you have a place that appears to be contributing to an excessive use of City resources (Police Calls) you demand that the business find a way to solve the problem or they will be penalized.

McD's will probably be required to hire full time security, enforce their behavior policy more diligently and partner with the local Captain on enforcement issues. In return, more sweeps of the park near Haight will probably be run by SFPD and the Park Service.

The political will to enforce Drug Laws is EXTREMELY low in SF, particularly in neighborhoods with a narcotics history as part of the accepted culture like the TL, Fillmore and Haight Ashbury. In the Tenderloin, people smoke crack right in front of Police Cars and they do nothing unless businesses call and make them. Even then it is typically that they just take the pipe and break it on the street and roust the guy to the next block unless the crackhead has enough that he might be dealing. I have a good working Relationship with the Police Captain that runs the TL STation and he is quite honest that it takes his Officers off the street for 2-3 hours to book a guy and he doesn't want to take his guys off the street that long for something the D.A. won't even bother to chase, because somes times somebody starts trying to kill people and he needs his guys around for that.
