SFO plane crash (7/6/13)

No shit there is. How many times have you landed there? I've done it more than a few. Want to compare log books(and I do mean plural)? I've landed everything from a PA-31 to a Lear 55 there, on that runway. And being off from the centerline just a little, with how high the tail is on a 77, it's a total possibility. And the amount of thrust it makes at idle isn't enough to make that much spray. Like I said, your half knowledge is muddying the waters here.

What level of certificate do you hold? How many type ratings do you have? Because it'd real easy to see. The FAA doesn't hide that kind of info. I make my money flying people around. If my memory serves me correct, you make your money by following people around.

:wow

I am in AWE of your e-pen0r!

If he was there.....

.....The 777 may have crashed into it.....

It's okay as long as it's lighted and flagged.

:laughing

do you have a sponge bob picture for that ?

I am also curious to know this. Marlowe has done his homework, but I don't think he knows a much as he leads on.

New reports are showing a emergency vehicle may have ran over one or two of the victims.

tail strikes are not an unknown problem, especially with certain aircraft (md11 comes to mind)

I'm pretty convinced the tail got wet, HOW wet.... :dunno

Wet, maybe, but this idea that they were skeet-surfing for hundreds of yards first seems to be a stretch. If they were in the water that far back, I'd really expect them to have hit something. Yeah, maybe they're a Chinese jet pilot... but I'd really expect more visible debris further back, and:

Anyone know if the approach lighting looks intact? It hasn't been placed OTS.

Jet blast from what? They were at idle. If anything, it was either the tail hitting the water and it staying in ground effect, or the airplanes wake spraying.g.the water.

The engines were at full power (or commanded full power) right before impact. The pilot announced a go-around 1.5 seconds before impact.

I haven't seen the video. How long before the impact was there spray from the water?

Also, the pilot saying he's going around 1.5 second before means the tail probably wasn't dragging in the water until after that, if at all. I think dragging is the wrong term to use here anyways(correcting myself). Dragging implies something different than impact.

edit: just watched the video..certainly did look like dragging. But supposedly the engines were at full power too. The truth is, I don't know. :D
I would think the physics of dragging the tail in water would have brought the nose of the airplane down, and maybe that's actually why it wouldn't climb. ?? :dunno

edit:edit: After turning the volume down of the guy yelling OH MY GOD, and watching it a few more times, it's very plausible that the tail was in the water. Pretty perfect seaplane landing, minus the seaplane. The nose of the airplane immediately drops just after the spray appears which can mean it was being dragged. Also, the reported 90 knot speed..does anyone know if that was at impact or if that was the approach speed?

What if instead of jet wash it's simply spray from a several-hundred-thousand-pound aircraft passing in close proximity? Rooster tail? Or is that what you're counting as jet wash? Seems to me the simple aerodynamics would be enough to at least affect the water a bit without touching it. 35 mph under an ideal approach speed is still over 100 mph...no?

Btw, I agree that they likely hit the seawall and nothing in the ocean. This is pure speculation on the apparent water spray prior to touchdown.

The plane was so low (alt < wing span) that the ground effect may have come into effect, providing extra lift. This cuts off the wing tip vortices and may have splashed water. </speculation>
