Sick Excuse for a Comic-SJ Mercury 4-26

Sometimes I wonder why I even bother to post on this forum. I was looking at this from the perspective of the neglected child.

Yes, I am a father and have dealt with neglected children before. This sickened me, it is not funny in any way and I think the jerk who drew this is despicable.

You don't agree? Go somewhere else on the forum and I'll just check out for awhile.

Dan
So, you're assuming because the otherwise well-dressed and well-fed is black, that he's neglected? That's racist.

I LOVED Calvin & Hobbes, have three of the coffee table books. Great humor, I've enjoyed pulling similar humor on my daughter and the grandkids, the daughter and grandkids always enjoyed the humor also. Of course, we all had a good laugh whether or not they bought into the B.S. after I confessed I was foolin' them.

OP's cartoon was funny also. Cartoonist just left out the part about "Gotcha!" that the father would have said in the next panel, if there would have been one.

I've got Calvin and Hobbes tattooed on my ribs. :teeth

OP, I didn't find the cartoon to be offensive, but that's just me.

OP has the right to be offended over the cartoon just like others have the right not to be offended. OP Im sorry you didn't like some of the responses you got but it's BARF, it's the sink, it's what we do.

Wow, tattoos! My 24 year old daughter has two C&H coffee table books due to her introduction to the cartoon strip by me when she was much younger. They reside in her bookcase next to the original Grimm's Fairy Tales.

I'm going to take one of my books off the shelf and bring it to bed tomorrow night. Timeless humor, including the father ocassionally trying to pull a fast one on Calvin, which was my inspiration.

I never read comic strips anymore. That was mildly amusing. So were the other ones.

Child neglect? :dunno

Just to be sure. This is about the one with the joke about the kid being adopted but returned to his parents, right? If so, I fail to see the connection to child neglect. Is it because, were one to take the statement at face value, then the kid would have been neglected? He doesn't look neglected...

I admit I laughed, but bergman has a valid point; sometimes humor can really upset people.

True story: a couple of years after we divorced, Wife v.01 called me, drunk and spitting mad, to bitch me out. My father used to tease her about being adopted, as she was so different from her sisters. She had just found out that she *was* adopted, and was convinced that everyone knew but her. That was uncomfortable...

It's funny. Telling people to leave because they don't agree, that won't work here.

That's ok though. My wife has NO sense of humor, either.

Hey Dan, your being a bit too serious. It's a daily comic strip, not a political platform or social movement. Relax.

When Bill Watterson drew this a school shooting was an unimaginable occurrence. He still got hate mail for it from people with no sense of humor.

that is my favorite C&H ever!!!

LOL at being butthurt over a silly comic and writing the syndicate/newspaper and actually expecting a response! :rolleyes

Yes, we all have personal issues and may take offense at various things that don't normally offend most but you are old enough to be able to take things in stride and not be so serious about the silly stupid stuff.

And your response to the very low level criticism you've received so far in this thread? Wow. Take a chill pill and go out and ride and clear your mind!

:twofinger

I better go to another part of the forum so I don't hurt your feelings.....:facepalm

Your time is probably better spent doing what the other elderly folks do. Being nosey towards that young family across the street. I mean for gods sakes, they might be smoking the marijuana over there! Think of the children.

I thought the star trek one was a slam against trekkies so I wrote Nasa a scathing email.

And a line that has been around for decades. Any semi-sentient cartoonist had to know how unoriginal it was. Nerd fatwa!

Cyanide & Happiness
Just don't go there. You'll blow a head gasket.

Mohamed cartoons.

...Yes, we all have personal issues and may take offense at various things ...

We all would have been better off, had the OP simply laid out his personal circumstances and specific concern in an expose right from the start. :dunno
If you really wanted to!

I am sure all of us could appreciate sensibilities of others on that topic. What we didn't do is come over here and parade the comic as if it's the best thing we've seen today... none of us really wanted to.

Your time is probably better spent ,,,.

Just because humor night not be funny to every single person who reads it doesn't mean it can't be funny. I thought it was funny. Just because you're offended doesn't mean the artist can't express themselves, the newspaper can't publish and I can't laugh.

Are you implying some kinds of humor should be banned? Censored? What universal rule should we put in place to prevent you from being subjected to humor your disagree with in the future? Do you hate the 1st amendment?

"Sometimes humor can upset people" is a point, but it's use is minimal. It's stating the obvious. Clearly context and audience is a factor. What lesson can the newspaper take away from that statement? Should they stop publishing all cartoons or potentially offensive articles?

bergmen, are you aware there are entire TV shows that have been on for more than 10 years that focus entirely on being offensive to just about everybody?

How many letters have you written Family Guy or South Park?
