Sonoma county school changes grading system: 20% passes, 85% is an A

Spider in center of this web is the Teacher's Union. The Teachers don't teach so lower the standards. This is the impression when comparing Private vs Public Schools.

A Story highlighting the success rates of Harlem Charter School Vs a Public School. On the first few floors of a Harlem building is the Public School. On the Fifth Floor is a Charter School. 75% Students in the Charter School graduated with excellent grades and ready for College. Compared to the Public School where zero percent was educated enough to advance past HS.

One difference was Charter School Teachers arrived a Month early preparing before the School Year starts. Public School Teachers showed a day before School starts.
Another difference was Charter School had a three hours longer school day.
Amazing results considering the schools are in the same neighborhood. Both have the same student demographics.
This Charter School is so popular in Harlem they created several more. Parents having a choice between public and private schools is not lost In Harlem.

Did you even read the damn article? If you had, you'd know the teachers' union fought the changes and many teachers are unhappy with the change, which was foisted upon them by administrators over the objections of the teachers.

Does this have to do with funding? This would just raise GPA's at that school, which means they'd get more funding for the "better" grades being received.

Of course, this plan would just backfire if all schools started taking this approach, or that school in particular is going to be blacklisted since everyone will know that those A's and B's being handed out are fake...

Bronto just spouts GOP talking points

The teachers were against the change. Shit a comic collaborater of mine is the art teacher at this very school. He fuckinh hates the rule

It was a TV news story. Union Teachers weren't interviewed.

Shame on the school district. I guess more employers will be ignoring high school transcripts and requiring SAT/ACT and the like.

Except the teachers and the teachers' union is against this measure.

I'm not talking about Sonoma. Just an observation of Harlem Charter Schools. Mostly because it doesn't blame the Students for the failings.

More Charter School in Sonoma. Longer School Days, better prepared teachers. Serious education for students.

Sonoma Public Schools is looking to graduate failing students just like the Harlem Public school do.

If this is for funding then it is a perfect argument in favor of standardised testing.

If anything, wouldn't this highlight the inherent flaws with our broken standardized testing system and the way schools/teachers are graded & payed?

thats an interesting idea. once u get through college, employers already do mostly ignore highschool accomplishments. if this were to happen, even kids that didnt go to college could get the same treatment. itd prob all turn back around so that the school would be judges based on students SAT scores, which is very bad for some school.

I don't follow your logic, can you elaborate?

I see it as the opposite. This school district may be doing this to make their grades look like they are better than they actually are. If we have standardised testing, then everybody is graded on the same scale. You can't call an 80% score on a test an A.

Seems like there would be some changes in colleges and whatnot which would make this new system meaningless and all it will really end up doing is put high school diplomas in the hands of otherwise failing students, but high school diplomas are pretty much worthless these days anyway. A student on the fringe will be more likely to accept the easy route instead of fight for that D-, which is kinda sad.

The problem is more that we are afraid to tell them that. When I was a kid, your football coach would tell that 250lb 7th grade bulldozer eating crayons on the team that, "You, Son, are a very capable dummy. You are well advised to join a trade union or join the military as soon as you are able."

:laughing

That's how they do it in Japan, after placement tests to find out who has smarts and who doesn't. Then they pull little Takahashi aside and say "son, have you ever thought about how much fun it would be to drive a dump truck?"

Yes, we did this in America too, back in the 50's and 60's when we were actually competing against a Soviet menace in the sciences and the fate of the species rested on our need to create greater minds than the great Red Horror.

But now we have feels, so winning is too hard. :|

Makes perfect sense. Americans are a superior life form made entirely of 'Merica, Freedom, Football and Bacon Cheeseburgers. We can do what we want.

Soviets were Communists, which aren't even humans.
