from the Superintendent
Dear Parents,
Many of you may have seen the news article and editorial printed in the Press Democrat regarding grading in Cotati-Rohnert Park Unified School District. What the Press Democrat put in a story this week and editorialized about is not our policy. Unfortunately the story had quotes in it that seemed to make it appear that some of our teachers or even myself thought it was our policy and that is unfortunate. It is difficult to say what the motivation of the teachers involved may have been who shared the information that formed the basis for the incorrect story and graphic on the front page. They may simply have misunderstood.
The grading scale as shown on the front page of the Press Democrat and referenced in their editorial is not sanctioned by the school district and was never discussed, debated or approved by our Board of Trustees.
It is disappointing how quickly a falsehood can be spread. I hope when people read something that is as preposterous as what the Press Democrat wrote this week they would trust their instincts and know that it is not true.
Corrective information was given to the Press Democrat reporter in advance and after the story, but for some reason the Press Democrat chose to ignore it. Shockingly, the Press Democrat did not contact me or any member of our Board of Trustees prior to printing their false editorial.
Since what was falsely reported is not our policy, and we do not support it, our focus is on explaining that, not justifying it in any way.
Your child's teachers, principal, district leadership are dedicated to providing excellence in education. We want all of our students to have a successful education based on teaching and learning. We do not want any child to fail and we have tremendous support for those students. Giving credit beyond failing without achievement is not one of them.
If you have any questions regarding how your child is being graded, please review his or her grades online or contact his or her teacher. If you have any further concerns, please contact your child’s principal.
