A never before seen police dash cam video was shown in court today in the trial of an Ottawa Hills police officer accused of shooting and paralyzing a man during a traffic stop.

The video shows Officer Thomas White following Michael McCloskey and his friends on their Harleys. At one point, McCloskey takes off at a high rate of speed. Officer White hits his siren and McCloskey stops his bike.

Officer White ends up shooting McCloskey. Attorneys for White say he believed McCloskey had a gun. However, McCloskey was unarmed and appears docile in the video.

The jury will have to determine if the shooting was justified. White is charged with felonious assault and faces up to 11 years in prison.

Not trying to condone the asshat acting like tool but I didnt think it was necessary to shoot him at that point. The guy was facing the other direction..... He played the game and lost hard...

Oh boy, I'm very pro police, anti bad-guy, and usually think that if you run from them, you should get your ass shot.

This one is pretty questionable though....

wow....just wow..... hard lesson to learn for running from the cops. If indeed you would call that running....

The cop could have handled things differently, he could have shot him in the leg or something if he really felt that threatened.

He also could have hidden behind his door and used it as armor, or stayed in the squad car, and instruct him to turn the bike off, throw the key to the ground, get off the bike, and get on the ground.

I had an encounter with an enraged officer this past weekend that also over reacted and ended up arresting a friend for a situation that the officer provoked. I respect and admire LEO's for the job they do, but some of them need to learn how to control their rage.

did the cop order him to put his hands up?
looks like the cop over reacted, but will probably get off.

treat cops like pit bulls looking for an excuse to attack.
welcome to the police state

.

I suspect you never have fired a handgun.

Nonetheless, looks to me like the dude on the bike was just trying to hold up a big ass pig. If he put his hands up ( and he was not given any time to do that) it would have fallen over on him. Looks like manslaughter to me.

Shit, from the camera's vantage point, the guy's right hand was low towards his right pocket. From the officer's vantage point, more directly behind the guy, it might have looked like he was reaching into his waistband or pocket.

The officer jumped the gun, but the biker provoked the circumstances that led to the shooting. This isn't really that much different than the Oscar Grant/Mesehrle case. In both cases officers were attempting to apprehend the subjects, both probably had massive adrenaline dumps going on, and both subjects provoked the officers' response.

Don't be an asshat around people with guns and you decrease your chances of getting shot.

how did the rider provoke. Looked to me like he just pulled over and kept his hand on the bars to keep balance.

Looked to me like they blasted off from the stop sign at high speed. Cop instincts kicked in, much like a mountain lion chasing after running prey. Now the cop's adrenaline is flooding his system, muscles all twitchy, tunnel vision, blood roaring in his ears. Dude failed to show hands. Boom! Bad things happened.

and kept his hand on the bars to keep balance.

His left hand was on the bar. Holding the clutch maybe. But his right hand was straying around his right pocket/waistband area, right about where right-handed shooters would keep their guns.

Both parties made mistakes.

ow are you guys coming to the conclusion that the guy ran? the cops lights came on and the one guy who got shot stopped, the guy who jumped the curb did so only because another cop car came right at him. I dont see any running here, not to mention if the bike was still on he could have been turning to try and hear what the cop was directing him to do.
:thumbdown

I'm not. But if you asked the officer in question I'm sure he would say that he thought they were running. Which provoked his response.

You mean what every motorcyclist does at every stop? :laughing

They're Harleys. They jumped off the line quick, but I'd hardly say at a high rate of speed. Acceleration <> speed. Then the cop lit them up and the one dude probably was like 'oh shit that was a cop behind us' which distracted him long enough to blow the turn.

Did you watch the long version of the video? The cop was following them for quite some time through a number of stops where they pulled out pretty much the same way. The only difference at that stop was how they stayed stopped a while and appeared to be talking to each other.

In the newscast video with sound the cop doesn't yell anything at all to the biker...like turn off the bike, get off the bike, show me your hands, etc...nothing, just stop and *POW* paralyzed for life at 24 because you goosed it off a stop at 2AM.
