Sport car drivers = slow, Sport bike riders = fast - why?

99.9% of car drivers are pussies.

This. Ever been to a car track day? My lord what a bunch of dorks (sorry, stereo typing I know). My brother and I used to do a decent amount of car track days in our Porsches, and then discovered bikes... Ever been stuck behind a poser in his Ferrari coming into turn 1 at T-hill? Makes you want to pull your hair out...

(side note: I know that there are a decent amount of good drivers out there, so save it...)

simply because most people cannot afford a porsche until they're past middle age, and at that point the thrills come at much lower speeds.

if 20 year-olds could buy a gt2, you can bet that they'd be ripping around everywhere. the rest of us have to settle with what we can afford.

Bollocks ! I'm 53 and have been "ripping it up" in all maner of cars since I got my license. Sure now I'm middle aged I can afford faster toys but that's not the point. I know tons of guys and gals my age who are the same.

As others have noted in a car its mostly to do with traffic. Its a lot harder to split lanes in a car :teeth So we look for quiet times and quiet roads to rip it up :thumbup

Ok, I've never driven a sport car of any sort, so I don't know what it's like.. and I'm gonna talk out of my arse and pose a silly question 'cause as I said I've never driven a sport car.....
There fixed it for you :teeth :rofl

there is a good reason for the slow driving those cars are ticket magnets. I tend to think police officers figure if you can afford an expesive car you can afford expensive tickets and unless you have a loud exhaust bikes dont seem to draw as much attention.

In my experience most moto riders have their heads further up their asses and have something more to prove.

I agree with the more money spent = more responsible comment.

The exception is women + minivans + 925 area code , they just flat out haul ass and have no problems tailgating 3ft from your bumper at 80+mph...

Then when they pass you on the right, don't forget about the "baby on board" sign on the window.

It's a good thing that never happens at moto track days - folk with uber-fast bikes parking them for corners...

I saw a fast Lotus up at the backside of 9 last Saturday.

Well... the back end looked fast, the front was all smashed to shit when it ate the guardrail...

Sport Cars = $75k-150k = Senior Management
Sport Bikes = $5-15k = Shipping Clerks/Sales Guys

+1

I also agree that most of them buy it for the status symbol and the name.

Maybe in most of the country. Here $75-150k is 3-5 years experience and maybe project manager level. Senior management would be $300k-$1mil and would involve things like bentleys, lambos, etc.

Drive like you ride and see how long it is before the man takes your toy away.
Also, if you ride you motorcycle like you ride your bicycle, you'll get similar results.

Cost of the car.

My boss drives a 20 year old Mazda truck and a early 2000's VW.

If you can afford a 100k+ car, you have to be very senior or very lucky.

I've had a bunch of fast cars (2 M3's, Grand Sport Corvette, etc, etc) and have driven them all within an inch of their lives. My first M3 even found it's rev limiter in 5th gear. Sweet.

I also spent the night in jail and my Corvette spent the night in impound. Whoops. There ya go. That's what happens when a 19 year old drives a fast car. And before anyone comments.... I bought them myself. I lived with my Mom, but I had really cool cars.

I'm old and stodgy now and save it for the track.

FWIW.... Ferrari drivers suck in general. I've yet to see a decent driver in a Ferrari. Road or track. Somebody prove me wrong.

Most drivers dont sit at the light with their car in first gear 'ready to go' like bikers do. Porsche clutches are expensive to replace.

Example:

I'm first in line at red .. light turns green, takes me a split second to recognize .. then move my hand from radio / phone / gf to grab shifter .. clutch .. shift to first .. then start moving. This takes anywhere from 2-5 seconds. By the time I start moving, the biker sitting next to me at the light is already doing anywhere from 30 to 50.

A lot of those people just spend more on their house and still drive a Honda, too.

Once you make the ends meet, they move the ends sort of thing.

Whoa whoa. Even if you bought it brand new, having a Grand Sport Corvette at 19 would put you around my age at the most. 35 ain't old and stodgy yet is it? Or should I stop and buy a patio chair on the way home so I have a place to sit when I tell kids to get off my lawn.

Good info.. Just talked to a much older (60+) buddy of mine about it because he has a Porsche S4, and he also rides sportbikes on the track - he said in the Porsche he feels way more conspicuous and takes up much more space or else he'd be rippin it..

He also said that people/cops are used to seeing guys moving fast on motorcycles, so that its no big deal, but if they see a guy in an expensive car jetting away from stoplights it catches their attention much more, and so he doesn't feel comfortable hitting it hard on main roads in his Porsche..

Oldmadbrit's mum wears combat boots also..

Is it just not fun to rip around in a sport car like it is on a bike or something?

I feel like, if I was driving a Porsche or a 350z or whatever, I'd at least be stepping on it when the light turned green sometimes, but yet I pretty much never see anyone in a sport car doing anything but driving sedately along like all the other cars..

It is fun to drive a performance car but the dog gets carsick in the back. I've caught up to some fast riders in my beemer on 9.

What about folk who drive classics, like Old Zs, mustangs, Cameros, Roadsters ect?
