I'm curious. How does just wearing a back protector feel safe? Is it the feeling of being held tightly about the torso? Like a hug? Does the same thing apply for just wearing a leather vest?

It's a well-known fact that back protectors prevent spinal injury. Don'tchaknow. Road rash is cool; wheelchairs aren't.
 
As an experiment, go outside and rub your hand briskly back and forth on some pavement that's had the sun shining on it for a while.

Now imagine crashing on it at speed while wearing jeans and a T-shirt.
