Helmet theft confuses me. Why would they want your smelly helmet?

well OK. I read through all the posts, and I can provide some info.

They can post it on CL and someone will come buy it . DUH

I've seen those and at places they sell

Same with the no-D ring. You think they care? Other states don't even require a helmet so obviously whoever is stealing it is only gonna use it so the CHP doesn't pull them over

BUT... I'm hoping for the best for anyone who locks their gear well and in a well-lit place. Has to be done sometimes...

I hear tweakers will steal your spark plugs so they can make it into a pipe, then kick over your bike. I dunno. My buddy had his R6 kicked over in SF.

My co-worker used to drive to a park and ride, pull out his bicycle and ride the rest of the way to work. 2x tweakers broke his window and stole nothing.

There's no sense to what tweakers or scumbags will do. Just be prepared for the worst.

Just my $.02: If I had to leave my motorcycle anywhere sketchy, I'd ride a worthless, ugly, P.O.S. & lock it up with some solid locks to something unmoveable. I wouldn't leave anything I need or of value on the bike either.

I've had my helmet stolen...sucks mightily. Might ask BART if there are security cameras in the parking lot.

What sort of cable lock were you using? Was it one of those thin, portable kind or one of the bulkier bicycle locks?

It amazes me that people leave their helmets on their bikes ALL the time. Restaurants, movies, malls, anywhere... there's a bike, there's usually a helmet sitting on the mirror, seat, or just handing on the pegs. Even with the helmet lock going through the double D rings... I simply don't get it.. Unless you paid 20-30 bucks for a helmet, it makes sense. But most good helmets are $300 and up, most of us know that. Would you leave 3 hundred dollar bills, or even your old cell phone laying around?

I always take my helmet....and that's it. Anyone who knows the actual value of a helmet will snag your helmet in a heart beat. Bicycles that cost half the price of a helmet get stolen all the time... Lesson learnt!

That concept works on the bike side as well.
Precisely why I have an EX500 jammed between 2 gixxers in my garage.
