A pair of "Lock-Loppers" (bolt cutters) would be a lot faster.1. Bring a tarp and a blanket like movers use.
2. Lay tarp on ground, blanket on tarp, bike on blanket.
3. Drag tarp under gate.

Think that would work? I have those things, and saddlebags to bring them.
I don't think that's a good idea. I doubt everyone wants to drag their bikes under the gate. I don't think there is enough room to get a big bike under anyway. It's not like there is a mystical oasis serving free beer on the other side of the gate. It's just a well trodden dirt road.
ThanksStudying the photos posted by Leo_jb and SFMCjohn; I suspect we can get the thumpers around the 'south' post of Rd-40 East gate with 3 guys walking each bike over. The ADV bikes can also go around the 'obstacle'.. best to have 4 guys per bike.
Now that's the adventure... you guys will have thread on a route most have never ridden before.
No worries on your FZ6. We had a Versys and a Triumph Bonneville out riding Knoxville OHV a few weeks ago... they did just fine on street tyres.
Plated, Green or Red sticker required Source: BLM Ukiah Field Office OHV Regulations You'll have to comply with the same regs if you plan on riding the Mendocino NF annual rally or Sheetiron 300 in May.
My thought was:
1. Bring a tarp and a blanket like movers use.
2. Lay tarp on ground, blanket on tarp, bike on blanket. And watch the whole shitteree burst in flames when my hot exhaust touches said blanket!
3. Drag tarp under gate.

Chew are funny!I was thinking mostly about the photo-op! How often do you get to see someone Set their bike ablaze?
Will probably bring the stuff anyway, just in case. Kinda looks like enough clearance on the right side.

Just found this thread and thought I'd add my .02. I rode Rd 40 in early January starting from Hwy 16. Made it all the way to the closed gate, where I tried to drag my KTM990 under it. Didn't work, so had to ride all the way back to Hwy 16. Still, it was a fun ride. I think I met Seavoyage this past Sunday on Doc Wong's ride.
Why didn't it work? Looks like downhill from the other side... would it help to bring a tarp or something?![]()
Hey Leo! I met you on Sunday as well. Fat guy, black wee-strom with yellow stripes. I remember the dragging attempt story. Love it!
Nice vid from last weekend... http://youtu.be/N_GzeoQtn9c wish you could join us this Sunday
Leo_jb tried to drag his KTM 990 ADV under the gate, but couldn't clear his handlebars. So the tarp/blanket idea wouldn't give you any additional advantage other than saving the paint.
Brave adventurer.. Leo for trying ... I didn't notice the scratches on the side when I saw his KTM last Sunday... his orange engine guard saved the day.
I was there about a month ago, gate was open but a big Closed sign was up. Was tempted to go through but turned around.
I'm interested in this ride but I'm coming from the West side (37, 29, 121). Any idea about what time you'd be through? Not sure on the exact route you all are running from Fairfield either but I'm assuming 121, 128, and Lake Berryessa are involved at some point. Plenty of stopping areas on Lake Berryessa that I could wait at.

In......if for no other reason than to witness rodr throw his shiny WeeStrom on the ground and try to drag it under a locked gate.
Now that's gotta be a Kodak moment fer shure!

Source: www.yolocounty.orgPrior to ceasing maintenance in 2009, County Road 40 was closed every year to vehicular traffic from October until May, or until the rainy season subsided. Since the road has been designated and signed as an unmaintained road for nearly three years, as per the Streets and HighwaysCode, the County is no longer obligated to maintain seasonal gate closure.
