So, are these just a lot of diesel trucks blowing up? Most of these look like turbo failures (I guess). Is it normal for folks to ignore various gasses and vapors coming off their motors so as to not back off?

Depending on the failure mode, a "run-away" diesel can't always be stopped unless you block off the air intake. Diesels do not have throttles, so you have to physically block it off.

If it's a fuel flow problem (injector(s) stuck open or fuel metering system goes full blast [depends on if it's mechanical or not, again, various failure modes]), you can stop a runaway engine by cutting off the fuel.

If say, you have a turbo shaft seal go and the turbo starts sucking engine oil and blasting it into the combustion chambers (yeehaw!) then you're phuqqt until the engine runs out of oil and/or something physically gives up (thrown rod, etc.). In which case, you're phuqqt anyways. But yeah, can't stop that one unless you gag the air inlet. Which isn't always necessarily quick or easy to do.

Point is, you can't necessarily "back off". :party
