The NHL Thread, 2012/2013 season

Jumping between the Sharks-Avs game and the Philly-Buffalo game yesterday seemed like I was watching two different sports. I've been a Sharks fan for 20 years and I don't think I could be more depressed about them than I am now. We simply don't have the talent, regardless of what anybody says about 'on paper', to compete with any of the even remotely elite teams in the league. And our system is awful and getting near unwatchable compared to some of the more uptempo teams. My hope at this point is that we don't make the playoffs and the ownership group/GM realize that it is time to blow this team up and start over.

I'm at the point where I agree. It took the Penguins vs Maple Leafs game on Saturday for me to realize it. Oh, and the Av's vs Blackhawks. Younger talent is where the game is at. They are so fast and versatile. Patty and Thornton chug along OK, but not where they need to be..

We don't have the offensive onslaught we once had. Defense is finally there (or seems to be) and we can't finish! We can barely score 3 goals. That's an issue in the NHL today.

I wouldn't be surprised if we saw some major changes in the offseason, but they sure won't do it before the playoffs or during them. Short season, you play the hand you are dealt.

Now, they may make a few minor changes, but I don't see anything crazy coming down the pipe.

While our D is certainly better than it was last year and pretty strong in our zone, we don't have any strong puck moving defensemen and teams are feeding on that. It's a big reason why we are awful at breaking out with speed and numbers compared to any of the elite teams in the league. It's just painful to watch. Even when we get the puck out of the zone, we've had to use so much center/wing support to do it that we rarely have numbers in transition.

And up front we just don't have enough speed, play making ability/creativity or anything remotely resembling grit in our Top 6, save Clowe and he's more angry than gritty these days. Clowe is starting to remind me of Ben Eager.

I really think it's time for a huge housecleaning at this point. The only veteran players on our roster that I wouldn't trade right now are Coture, Pavelski and Niemi. And sadly, I think Gomez is playing better than any of our bottom six and if he had anyone who could remotely finish on his line, he'd have 15 assists by now. And the only young guy that gets me the least bit excited is Kennedy. That kid has some skills and reads the play very well. I think he will develop into a decent player. Irwin I'm not sure on yet.

I don't this I've ever been this depressed about the Sharks. Not even when we had Hawgood on the blue line and a decrepit Bernie Nichols up front.

How about Brent Burns playing fuckin forward? :laughing

They played REALLY well against the Blues. Bad luck and we're finding that the achielles heel of the Sharks are break aways. The Blues coach knew it too, which is why he put a fast guy up top and brought his center down low to have 3 home at all times. Then they capitalized on each break away, even though the Sharks out shot and outplayed them in their zone.

I think we're OK, but need more speed in the years to come.

One the most effective forwards on the ice for sj....crazy enough they are deep in defense and light on wingers. But yeah, burns as a 3rd line forward for Seto, Coyle and a 1st seems like an absurd trade by dw when looking at it like that.

I find it ironically funny that it takes a defenseman to teach forwards how to be forwards.

You can't teach size. Burns is so effective because he's big, he's very effective at protecting the puck (probably the most underrated, yet important skill in the NHL) and he can shoot the puck. He's a beast.

As exciting as last night's game was, it's hard to overlook the fact that we have 3 regulation wins in the last 21 games and, but for a stupid penalty on their part, we probably lose that game.

There are five teams that have separated themselves from the rest of the league this year and I'd be surprised if the Cup winner isn't one of them. Probably 1 or 2 other teams with an outside chance.

Canadians, Penguins, Blackhawks, Ducks, Bruins?

And whoever is "Pucking5Hole" you are fucking screwed man! Missing a D slot in the lineup, both goalies on DTD. Shitty! :laughing

Yup, though I'm still not sold on the Canadiens. Of the rest, the only teams I think have an outside shot are the Nucks, the Blues and possibly the Kings, simply because they're trending the same way they did last year and they have some firepower. If I were a betting man, right now I'd put 50% of my money on the Pens, 25% on the Hawks and 25% on the Ducks.

Me either, they have been shit for the last several seasons. Not sure where this flash of brilliance is coming from. But they ARE they highest valued team with big payroll. You would think they'd be perennial champs.

I dunno, I think the Penguins and Hawks are going to be plagued with injury right before the run. And from my experience, having a full healthy squad is what it takes. I would place the Ducks higher.

You know who flopped and I thought would kick ass, the Minnesota Wild. Fuck that team has some talent on it now! Amazing how that worked out.

And, you're gonna hate me for saying it, but the Sharks have looked better the last few games. Certain guys are now healthy and it ties back to what I was saying, you just need to get in the playoffs and have a healthy squad. Look at the kings last year, their top 3 guys came back about 10 games before the playoffs, won ALL of them, then crushed through the playoffs.

I dunno man. Shit is quite balanced, which is why I really like the NHL, not just because I play ice hockey..

Damn, this Penguin team is tough. Rangers are playing well, but Pittsburgh is doing a great job keeping the Rangers from getting good shots on goal.

Hopefully in the 3rd period, the Ranger's can break through and tie this game up. Would be great to get out of here with a win. Go RANGERS!!

ETA: Did I mention this Penguin team is good? :(

A little spin on the trend of supplemental discipline in the NHL.

If they can't make the playoffs I don't think I'll be mad. The way they've been playing they don't deserve to be in the playoffs and would get swept if they did make it.

I liked Lucics hit on Miller, keep your ass in the net

Miller embellished. He was fine. He even tried to slash him after.

Frankly, they baby the shit out of goalies. For that play, he came out and it should be fair game. Besides, he has plenty of pads on. :)

Douglas to Pitts for two second round picks. Good job, DW. :thumbed

I'll miss ya, Crankshaft, but we gotta start building young talent.
