The NHL Thread, 2012/2013 season

Niemi's been great this season though. You can't do much more as a goalie if your team isn't scoring.

I laughed and cried, only cause it's true

+1 Niemi's probably be one of the better players on the team. There's only so many games you can win when your team only scores 1 goal

aside from playing some really soft teams with defenses that weren't NHL ready to begin the season, Niemi is the only reason SJ's even had a shot to win in almost every game.

and now with Burns out for an extended period of time again, maybe Irwin gets called up and they start playing a little better transition game.

but honestly, SJs problem is the same problem they've dealt with for 3 or 4 years: they're SLOW. only so much the system can do to help speed up their offensive flow. it's the reason the forwards are bailing out of the o-zone early, to help out the defense.

Marleau's still the fastest player on the team, and he's like 47 years old. Pavs is slow. Clowie's slow (and somewhat retarded). Couture's slow. DW got rid of the other fast players (mitchell and mcginn). and now we're a boatload of sloths.

anyways...go sharks?

Absolutely right about the Sharks being slow. And with the depleted prospect pool, this issue was supposed to be resolved with the acquisitions of Handzus and Havlat....both of whom are past their primes.

Agreed. Seto was one of the faster ones we traded too.

However, Sharks are looking pretty good tonight. PP is looking better for the first time in ages.

Agree with everything you said, but we're also not gritty enough. We've got a few gritty players, but we have way too many guys that just play way to soft a brand of hockey. We need more guys on the top 2 lines going to the net with bad intent every time, all the time. We have too many players who seem to want to be competing for the 'most gentlemanly player' award every night. Marleau, Pavs, Thornton, Couture, Havlat. All skill players. None conjure up the image of 'hard to play against'. Compare that to the top 6 of the Kings last season. The Kings top 6 may be not quite as 'skilled' on paper, but they were wayyyy harder to play against. And they all have their names on the Cup now.

a win is a win. honestly: did anyone not see the Avs coming back to tie it in the 3rd?

I'll give SJ this: they tried. the effort was there. I saw flashes of team speed, especially on the power play, which is a positive sign. maybe the ship will be righted?

on another note, Detroit comes into town on thursday with a 9-7-3 record. SJ is now 9-6-3....weird how these two perennial playoff teams seem to mirror each other an awful lot, eh?

Bwahaha, ofcourse I drop heatley the day he scores twice, fml

:laughing seriously huh? I have him in my pay league, and of course, put him on the bench for the first time this week...the bastard leaves the sharks and he STILL finds a way to be a pain in my side!

how bigs your pay league if you don't mind me asking? i was thinking about what tina was saying with the "who cares" comment. Hurt my feelers. But she's right, it doesn't really matter, not until the post season anyways. If everybody makes the playoffs who gives a shit (not that i don't like what looks to be my back to back presidents cup trophy :p ) . Would definitely be better if half the people in the league didn't make the playoffs, and there was some money on it so people would actually participate, imo anyways.

we've dwindled over the years. only 8 owners now. definitely could use more...if you're interested I'll give you heads-up next year :thumbup

It's a lot more simplified. much like fantasy football, you set your lineup for the week. get points for goals, assists, and wins (goalies). head-to-head. top 4 make the playoffs.

i like the yahoo set up and wish we could just get more people interested in joining our BARF deal with some cash, but sure gimme a heads up next year :thumbup

In my personal experience, it's tough to find people who are willing to shell out money for fantasy hockey. Esp since the sport is not as popular, it's harder to find people with the will and means to pay to play. Hell, I already had a hard time finding 10 people on BARF for this free league! lol

=====

Went to the game last night, thought the team's energy was pretty good until ~10min left in the game. Then we started looking real slow and tired. Thought we had some great chances and deserved the W. Gustavasson made some killer saves and, as always, Datsyuk has amazing talent.

Might be too late now, but I wouldn't be entirely surprised to see McLellan fired, even if it's just to shake things up. Kind of sad to know if it weren't for the 7-win streak, we'd probably be sitting very near the bottom.

maybe we can do what would be referred to as 'side pots'. i.e.: whoever's interested is put in a side pot list. We predetermine a wager amount, like $5 a game or something. Wagers only count when two teams from the side pot pool play against each other. win-loss records are tallied, then at the end of the season the ones who owe pay up.

Interested?

what would you like the terms to be? $5 a game? more? less?

I went to a Bulls game a few weeks ago for the first time. Had a puck flying two feet over my head within the first 15mins we sat down. Good times.

lucic beating up on brandon prust- watch the nose honk at :48 and then finishes up looking like kornholio (not the barfer) after prust almost gets the sweater over..
