The Official 2017/2018 NFL Thread

he's never gotten the superstar hype

but he's no scrub. hasn't been since Harbaugh. he's playing as well as Stafford or Ryan and other names that get way more props

Well, as his Coaches, maybe they know something we don't? I have long been a Smith supporter, always said he got a raw deal in SF, but he has never been a super star type. At his age, you figure he will probably decline quickly.

Brady, 40
Brees, 38
Rivers, 35
Rothelesburger, 35
Rogers, 33
Smith, 33

QB's just aren't declining like they used to... the decline of the decline?

They'll get a few years out of him.

(I didn't include Eli because, well, he looked like he declined... a lot.)

I think Aaron rodgers is the next Peyton Manning. Never got his full potential out. Manning should have won way more super bowls than he did.

I too think Smith has not received the credit he deserves. I for one would have welcomed him in a Denver uniform.

I actually think a comparison to Favre is more appropriate, and not just because he's in GB.

P Manning made made it 4 Super Bowls, no easy feat. OK, he lost 2.

Favre made it 2, he lost 1, but never made it back in the 10 more years he played. Sure, he set all kinds of individual records, but never got another chance in the SB.

Rogers made it to one, and won, but that is now 7 years ago. GB is going through a house cleaning right now. McCarthy's still there, but Capers (DC) is out, and a few other coaches were let go as well on the offensive side, and this under a new GM. We never saw the Packers play without Favre once he started, but without Rogers, that team was awful, and they knew it. It may take another couple of years for them to get back, especially with Minnesota now in their way. I'll be curious to see how Rogers adjusts his game as he ages, and if the team around him can get him there.

Yeah, I think that's a good point.

I definitely agree that Favre's teams were better than Rodgers'. But Rodgers almost anywhere else would have been better than the Packers let him be. Honestly, I think him with the Vikings or Detroit would have been great for the game of football.

Rodgers should have been in SF, which is where he originally wanted to play...being from NorCal and all.

I've always liked Rodgers, by all accounts he is a genuinely good person, the kind of role model that athletes should be.

No guarantee Rodgers would be good in SF.

Absolutely correct. However, SF is where he wanted to go when he was drafted, but Smith was chosen instead. If Grop plays like he did in his 5 starts last year, the 9ers have found their QB.

haha...reminds me of Grawp, Hagrid's half-brother from harry potter. I like that nickname

I remember when I first moved here twelve years ago, before I became familiar with American sports, I said to kids in middle school "Surely the yankees will win the super bowel this year." Never been ridiculed in my life as much as that moment :laughing

Alex Smith has a permanent black cloud over his fortunes. It's so weird. He can be so damn good but things just never work out. I was really hoping this was his year but I think this was it, the peak. It's like he's paying for somebody else's bad karma....cause I don't think he ever hurt anybody. He seems like a really good guy, but I wouldn't be surprised if he's kind of a bitter. I would have a hard time handling the shit that's come his way.

At the end of the day he is a very young man that has been given millions to play a game, I don’t feel sorry for him. OTOH, he has earned more respect than what he has been given as an athlete.

I know what you mean, but there is just some exceptional bad luck involved within the context of an NFL QB career. Plenty of guys have to play backup, but he really is a starter that cannot advance, for whatever reason. If Kaep had gone on and won the SB and not turned into a failed prospect, it would have put Smith's ignominous treatment into an understandable paradigm. I think people, even here, have tried to put it in the context of faulting his play but this last year, he played really well but the team ultimately failed him.

But yes, he has a fortune compared to me which will enrich his family for multiple generations if handled correctly.

I often refer to the Warriors as "my favorite bunch of millionaires' in the same spirit.

Smith career was never on his teammates.

It was always coaching, check his stats pre harbaugh era and look at how many offensive coordinators he went through.

And coaching did nothing to help Smith when Kelsey got taken out in 1st half. Fukn BB lost his te and it didn't stop them.

Smith also ducked out due to injury for the better part of a season as well.

I’ll agree that he has had a tough time of it throughout his career and hasn’t gotten the credit he deserves. He hasn’t always been the player we’ve seen over the past seven or so seasons.

That 30 for 30 The Two Bills was pretty interesting. I never cared for the Patriots but Belicheck is probably the GOAT as far as coaching goes...

49ers’ Terrell Owens voted to Hall of Fame; John Lynch still waiting
Third time’s the charm for Terrell Owens.

The former 49ers wide receiver was selected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame on Saturday after he was passed over in his first two years of eligibility. Owens possesses first-ballot credentials, but it’s believed he was forced to wait because of his divisive locker room personality.

The wait will continue for 49ers general manager John Lynch, a finalist for the fifth straight year who was not among the five modern-era selections. Lynch, a nine-time Pro Bowl safety with the Buccaneers and Broncos, was the only one among the final 15 candidates who had been a finalist on more three occasions.

“Congrats to a great and deserving class,” Lynch said, via Twitter. “Disappointed but humbled to be a finalist. Thanks to everyone for the support.”

The four other modern-era selections were linebackers Ray Lewis and Brian Urlacher, wide receiver Randy Moss and safety Brian Dawkins. Lewis, Urlacher and Moss were all first-ballot Hall of Famers. Moss finished his 15-year career with the 49ers in 2012, and his final game was their Super Bowl loss to the Ravens, which took place five years ago Saturday.
Certainly a troubled bunch going into the Hall of Fame in this year...
