The Ultimate DRZ-400SM Thread - Mods, Tips and Tricks

I've heard/read this about the KTM, dunno about the Husky. On the DRZ the FCR flatslide is worlds more responsive than the stock CV Mikuni, but is still relatively soft - it's one of the things that I actually like about the DRZ. It's comfy to ride around all day on goats and streets. Now where do I find something with the power and handling of the screamin' tards, but the excellent manners of the DRZ?

Guess I'll just have to keep the DRZ for a while longer :)

The DRZ has beautiful wheelie manners too, which is always a bonus on a supermoto. When I can lift the front in first gear and comfortably ride it out to 5th on the rear wheel, that's a great feeling. The KTM is like playing with a razor.

Dunno, I finally got a chance to wring out the Dorso yesterday. It was like riding a fat pig of a DRZ, but with more balls. Left me thinking hard about a 690SMC. 'Course there's that Husky 610 in the classified section... hrmmm. :p

I've owned a Husky SM610.

Ask me in person how I really feel about that machine:p

Anyways, it really is like a DRZ on crack. But it does have some drawbacks. The motor is very vibey even with the counterbalancer, and the gearing is very short. Compared to the DRZ, the bike does not feel very refined, and I also struggled with the stock suspension.

There's a lot to like about the bike, but there are also a lot of drawbacks.

As for the 690 SMC, that would be THE SM to get! I love that bike, it's just the used prices are not really inline with my reality at the moment. :)

Stan, empty some of your messages you can't get anymore lol.

Congrats on the bike.

Motostrano in Redwood City can get you the sprocket. Or you can call Sprocket Specialists and have them make you one.

Be warned though, if you go 38 or 39, you may need a new chain, or cut a link off your current one.

Thanks Stan. Damn this thread moves fast.

Riding the DRZ on I280 is not all that much fun, so I was just looking to take a few rpms off at 65-70 mph speeds. I called Motostrano but they didn't have 39t sprockets in stock, but maybe I can get one off BARF. I checked the gearcommander and it is 0.33" difference from 41t to 39t. Do you think it requires a chain link to be removed?

Otherwise the bike is a blast and great for evening rides out to Twin Peaks and Great Highway... It's tame on the hills and easy to negotiate in and out of my garage which is set off a steep grade. Wondering if I should have just gone to the KTM 690 but one thing at a time... :)

Where are you at in chain wear?

That really depends on how worn your chain is. You may have to move the slider block all the way to the back, and you'll still have too much slack on the chain.

It's brand new - bike has 200 miles now. I'll get the sprocket first, then decide.

Probably at this stage I can get away with the chain adjustment screws?

You should be fine.

If you want to swing by my house (I live near my work) sometime, I can even install the sprocket for you.

In my garage, safe and sound. I was thinking of riding it this week with the rain and all, but I didn't want to get it dirty.

YOU need to hand in your man card and have the DRZ endorsement removed. Don't want to get it dirty. Hrmphh. :x

Cool, once I start riding it down here for work I will take you up on the offer. I'll bring beer. Hope you like imperial stout, cuz that's the only thing I drink. :staRang
