Tour de France 2024 thread

I'm amazed to see Vino racing at such a high level after a terrible crash. And this is his first race after that injury.
BTW in an effort to rein in ridiculous cable TV expense, we're watching YouTube extended highlights in the evening of each stage.

Pogacar has a "gear" he didn't have in the past on long steep mountaings.

Seems the race is pretty much over at this point.

Can Vingegaard even hold onto second?

Bummed to see Girmay caught up in that late crash today.

Did he actually beat some of Armstrongs mega doped times? I'm not following close enough but, I though I heard he had bested some of Armstrong's times. If that's true.... um wow.

the top ten guys in this year’s Stage 14 beat Mr Armstrong’s best time up the 17 mile climb, or whatever, I heard.

Top 3 broke Mr Pirate’s record, Mr P by three minutes, maybe. Over 7 watts per kilo the whole time.

modern riders are light and strong, apparently, with a draft to catch when they are racing uphill … :facepalm :laughing

They did a segment discussing new tech vs a 10 year old TDF bike and indicated the changes, especially new tires, were significantly faster.

Hmmm. Maybe. 7+ watts/kilo for how long? Im very impressed. Equally as impressed with Keegan Swenson mopping up D ville. It’s nuts how good at things people can get.

I question how much Armstrong was eating during his races. Tadej is probably eating 120+g of carbs per hours during the hard days. IMO, that's "new" in cycling and I don't think Armstrong would have done that. Maybe Armstrong was eating 50g/hr. For how long TdF stages and these climbs are, there should have been significant performance gained by fueling with current strategies.

I’ve read that virtually all the speed gains from racers now compared to the turn of the century can be explained by improved caloric intake.

Bummed that Jorgenson couldn't hold on.

I was expecting that Pogacar move but was hoping it might be later so Jorgenson could get the well deserved win.

How Pogacar can repeatedly crush the field in mountain conditions that used to be a "weakness" is a mystery.

But the TDF is over and congrats to Carapaz from Ecuador for likely winning the polka dot jersey, Evenepoel from Belgium likely winning the white jersey and Girmay from Eritrea likely winning the green jersey.

Mr Armstrong and Mr George H were having an absolute melt down yesterday on The Move podcast about UAE and Mr T selfishly taking another meaningless stage win from the deserving USA rider. :laughing

awesome finish to today’s stage, and what a great champion the man in yellow has shown himself to be. :angel

yes, I definitely have mixed feelings about watching the melters, sometimes. I’ve been following them, JB Squared and Mr Horner.

Horner has cred with me.
UAE I find to be problematic. Buying a circus to bury the lede ...

yeah, as another example, SA’s sports-washing with the Dakar totally worked on me. I admit it. :facepalm:laughing

Plenty of action in Stage 20. Really enjoyed it. Finishing the race with a time trial isn't my favorite idea but I'm still excited to watch tomorrow.

Vingegaard solidified second which was a bit unexpected to be honest.

Hopefully Pogacar's win isn't marred by a future fail on drug test as I haven't seen that kind of solo dominance since the bad old "everyone's on drugs" Armstrong days.

it was fun rooting for Mr Vingegaard, yesterday. :thumbup

I absolutely refused to believe the doping/cheating rumors/charges about Mr Armstrong until I saw him admit it to Ms Oprah—so I’m pretty positive that Mr T is racing fair. :x :laughing
