Towing 720lb Bandsaw with '88 Dodge Ram 50?

After further review, my little truck won’t cut it. No hitch and tires are kind of bad.

Bro in-laws ford lightning has a busted trans cooler bracket and 2018 tags so that’s out :laughing

So I ordered a hitch for the Yukon xl and it should get here Thursday. Just needs 2 holes drilled and utilized the stock others. It’s a class 4, 1000 tongue and 10,000 towing.

The shop can fork lift it on. I plan to go vertical and strap the hell out of it. I thought about laying on the spline but would be spending more time rigging 2x4 to keep it from flopping around. I’d also have a tough time getting back up from being laid down.

Pic of what an laguna lt24x17 looks like. These ones are Italian made. More bandsaw than I’ll ever need. Really not sure how I’ll get it to fit but I’ll worry bout that later.

More than 60% off retail plus mobility kit and several blades that run $80-$120.

Autozone had one for $200 and came Wednesday. Same hitch on their website was $50 cheaper cuz a coupon BUT couldn’t shop to store and therefore comes the 15th. Lame.

Also if you need I may be able to help tow as well, my Durango will pull <edit> 8,000. Shouldn't be any issue to haul a trailer and a few hundred pounds. 5.7L HEMI does the job nicely.

do you have some kind of super heavy-duty Durango? isn't 13,000 lbs more like 3/4 ton pickup towing capacity?

Late night sleepy posting, confused it with the Ram. Dunno what I was thinking but yes the Durango tows less. Should still be more than enough though.

this is what the hitch can do, and has little bearing on what the truck can do. not that you'll be anywhere near the limits hauling this saw around unless you're using a rather massive trailer.

i expect the tongue limit on your SUV is 500lbs MAX. probably less
 
I'd tow this with a Camry pulling a HF trailer.

Yup. My Ranger with the steel bumpers towed 900 pounds on a HF trailer for years. On a ball hitch attached to the bumper.
 
My experience with Italian made machine tools makes me a lot less leg-humpy. :laughing

A deal I couldn't pass up, the thrill of the hunt, it's a problem. Also deal a lot in 8/4 lumber I've been wanting to resaw as well as some stumps I want to cut into small slabs.
 
egarding transporting, I chatted with Laguna customer service and they recommended tipping it over on the back spline. They said to place the saw bout 3-4ft from bed of truck with the help of 3 guys and tip over and push it in. This way no one is lifting the complete weight of the saw. Table is heavy but easy to remove as well.

Getting it out should just be the reverse.

I’m debating this. I don’t have a truck really but can rent one. Mine is a small 4cyl Dodge Ram 50. This saw does have the wheels on the rear. I wonder if during the tipping process it will kick out. I could always take the wheels off or hook up a come along to the bed and loop it around the top of saw to prevent that.

The table is 24x33” so it will stick out some. I’m not denying this, this will take up a lot of space in my garage. I have base cabinets along the garage wall it’s going. I might get rid of a set or just deal with it. All my tools are on wheels and we hope to be here maybe another year or two.

Height to the bottom of the roll up track is 87” giving the saw 3” to spare. It’s going to be higher than 83” during the tipping up at one point. I’m hoping once in the garage we can roll the door down and be ok to tilt it up. It’s 95” to the ceiling.
 
Just because you can get it moving doesn't mean you can safely stop. This is the BIGGEST thing towing n00bs overlook.

That and combined payload on the vehicle, plus those stressing their wee little running gear at 75+ MPH.

I find it interesting that some Camry's are rated 2000# and some 1000# towing capacity (10% tongue).

it might kick out if you're on any kind of incline but probably not. if it does, just run away from it, once that kind of mass gets moving best just GTF out of the way till it comes to rest. to be safe, tip it AWAY from the wheels first, put a/several block under it that renders the wheels non-rolley, then tip it to the wheel side resting the "top" onto the tailgate.

i would put a furniture dolly under the top of the saw to help with shoving it into the bed, or at least a moving/shitty blanket

lots of blocks and levers are going to be your friends with this, and don't even consider leaving the table attached to the saw. someone will use it as a handle and break the attachment mechanism, or itlll turtle over and smash into something also breaking a the flux capacitor or other hard to find part.
 
Measure diagonal distance from roller to opposite corner to get tip height.

'Should be' is a pretty shaky thing to bet on when the consequences are not insignificant.

FWIW........there are company’s that move machinery......might get a quote to see if it’s worthwhile.

That’s a nice bandsaw to pass up.

Just put that in the bed and strap it down over the table top. I think you're over-complicating things.

I worry about tipping even with major strapping down.

Saw weighs 650lbs. What about tipping it into my ram 50? I’ll have to get new tires before Saturday but they are cheap.

Payload is 1500lbs. I remember coming home from placerville with 500lbs of lead and a mini bike in the back. The tipping part onto my dodges tailgate before its lifted concerns me. That’s some weight on the tailgate.

After talking to costumer service I think going vertical images drove sketchy and getting out more difficult.
