Toyota Tacoma issue

I like your style Stan, but honestly it looks like more than you want to deal with.

If you do jump in;
The TRD is worth it just for the CARB sticker, I'd then try to do any and all upgrades for max power. I'd hope you can get a tuner like a COBB access port so you can reset to "factory smog settings" anytime.

It would be an improvement if you do much driving to Tahoe . Being able to ram air into the engine should help a lot on those climbs.
Down at sea level thats too much $$$ for a 45hp

I have an '06 X-Runner. It's got the 4.0LV6, pumping out a not so-impressive 240HP and 266 lb·ft torque. For a daily 'fun' driver, this is not acceptable.

The V6 in my '02 puts out a whopping 190hp. So I don't want to hear your whining. :twofinger

PS: Noid had a TRD blower on his Tacoma. Hit him up for the skinny. I have heard that once you install a supercharger, anything below 91 octane is going to ping and knock like hell.

I have driven a former coworker's Solara V6 that he had put a TRD blower on. It turned his brown engineer mobile into kind of a sleeper. :dunno

Man, reading thru above makes me realize why a co-worker is always whining about the mileage on his Tacoma. He has the TURD package...so that's it...I thought it was just positraction or some darn thing like that that gave it the designation...

Blower warranty is an interesting angle. Humm.

And the remap... More humm

Internet says your truck weighs ~3700 lbs and already requires 91 octane gas with 10:1 compression ratio. That engine is already pretty tweaked, there's a reason toyota will only sell you 45 more horsies

Even if I had the money, I wouldn't bother

The igr-fe motor is severely under stressed. They run on 87 stock.

TRD package is just a designation, doesn't mean anything more than SR5 does.

TRD stands for Toyota Racing Development. They also stamp it on the factory approved superchargers, but Toyota superchargers are always an aftermarket add on.

V6 trucks often get V8-ish fuel economy. With less power and capability. Except the Taco is a better truck than the Tundra. In all other cases, either go with the four banger or the V8. :D

Word. Those buying smaller trucks for fuel economy have been disappointed since...forever. I think Stan wanted something physically smaller for space reasons.

Right, I wanted a mid size truck for space/parking. Gas mileage is of no concern to me. I don't even know what mpg my taco gets as all I know its a bit better than 8mpg of my previous daily driver.

I wanted a truck that can haul bikes, pull at least a .90 on the skid pad, have some power, and be able to fit a baby seat in the rear cab. All while being somewhat compact. Oh I also wanted a 6-speed.

Yeah, I'm underwhelmed at the mileage figures i read about in Consumer Reports from small trucks. It surprises me that I get about 20 on the 4Runner, considering it has 4WD and the various bells and whistles...

I hear Ford is going over to more aluminum in the 150s. It will be interesting to see the result, mileage-wise.

Yes! I've done some homework on the 1gr-fe motor. It's understressed and only begin to break-in at 100k. There are bulit 500hp motors, but obviously thats not the norm.

And yes they run on 87 octane stock

There are really no more compact trucks. All midsize now.

Not completely true. I've had two GM half ton trucks, an 02 Sierra and an 06 Silverado, and both got shit mileage. One had the 4.8 v8, one had the 5.3. Fantastic motors aside from the mileage, though. Never an issue.

I have an 07 Tacoma now, and I get about 18.5 mpg with roughly 90% of my driving in-town. That's a good 5mpg better than my full size trucks got, so I'm getting what I wanted.

A good friend of mine has the supercharger in a FJ crusier (Same engine). He likes it, but has said that he would not spend the $5K on it again. He said that it doesn't give you that much extra power for what you pay.

Dood. It's a pickup. I love my Taco (1.7 L), it goes anywhere I want it too and it's bulletproof. I ain't gonna drag any Vettes with it. Who carees?

I feel so cheated.

That's kinda what I wanted to hear. All the keyboard warriors on the Taco forums make out the blower to be the next best thing and money well spent. I'd still like to drive one to see if it's something worthwhile.

You have a good point. what I always do with every vehicle I own is to make it perform better. I don't seem my truck as a pickup to make home depot runs with. I see it as a part time track hauler, and daily fun-mobile. I want to make it handle/accelerate/stop to the best of what my wallet will allow.

Not going to go into the motor. Just give me an additional 50hp and that will make me happy. I've already finished everything else in the truck.
