Toyota Tacoma issue

Not completely true. I've had two GM half ton trucks, an 02 Sierra and an 06 Silverado, and both got shit mileage. One had the 4.8 v8, one had the 5.3. Fantastic motors aside from the mileage, though. Never an issue.

I have an 07 Tacoma now, and I get about 18.5 mpg with roughly 90% of my driving in-town. That's a good 5mpg better than my full size trucks got, so I'm getting what I wanted.

I also came from a full size truck and the Taco is a good size compromise.

My only issue is I wish I would have held out until I found a longbed, but at that point it's basically the size of a silverado anyway.

When we looked at the 4-doors, I only wanted shortbed, but everyone tells me when hauling motorcycles, they wished they had the long bed. A 4-door long bed would be too long, so I had to settle for access cab.

Stan, I've gone through your pain many times in the past. In fact, my first bike almost wasn't, due to near buying a SC for my 94' Lightning…I was on the phone ready to order and bailed out. Best decision ever. I'd have lost a boat load on the deal and not started making money in bikes.

You won't make an S-runner anything else than a glorified run-around truck. Toyota didn't put the best power plant in it for upgrades and it really is a warmed over Taco when you look at most of the mods. Any money you put in won't just be lost, but you'll also further depreciate the value of the truck. The market doesn't like modified vehicles, especially SC'd, etc.

Sell it. Buy a Dodge SRT-10, if you need extra cab/ 4 door. Similarly, you also could get a Ford Harley Davidson (same package as Lightning, 4 door). BOTH of those trucks are increasing in value as of late (low miles ones). Lighting are incredible for the dollar…as fast as your M5 and carry a full load almost. I loved all the ones I had. The SRT-10 won't ever be seen again, IMO. It'll be worth good dollars later. The reports that it doesn't handle well are more aimed at the 4 door version; the 2 door version is a good little handler. Despite that, the 4-door handles really well for a large, heavy truck. If you spend the money on a good clean one with lower miles (get it fully loaded if you get the 4-door) and keep it in good shape, it'll have a good chance to increase in value as well as be something pretty rare. An S-runner isn't something car guys covet.

You're smart with your money. Don't put one dime into the S-runner. Change horses now and enjoy something new. The S-runner won't be near SRT-10/ Lightning quick with that SC.

16mpg in a Suburban 'commuting' between sea level and 4k'. Mike has lead foot?

you missed the 90% in town part, huh?

I have a 2014 Taco with the factory supercharger. I don't feel like writing everything down here explaining it. So call me up. PM me for my phone number.

I LOVE Lightnings, and if it had access cab with longbed, I would have one. The only other truck I like is the Dodge SRT-10 RAM quad cab, but that sucker is HUGE, and I kept reading how they handle like garbage.

X-runners are not boosted. But they look like they should be.:)

i drove both srt-10 reg cab and quad. quad cab didnt really impress me. it had power and most of it kicked in at about 45+ but not what i was expecting, the reg cab comes with a 6 speed that is a fuckin blast to drive specially if you can find an 06 that comes with the short shifter. but i dont think i would spend that kinda money for 45hp ill ask around to a few shops around campbell and san jose and see what i can get for ya. cheaper then the dealer for sure and these arnt just bs shops

Love ya Berto. you are right on the money. yes, I shouldn't be spending $$ on making the truck what it isn't and just go for what i really want.

you are making too much sense. The SRT-10 is the only truck that made my blood boil, but it's just too damn big. A tiny part of me also realizes that i'm trying to get away from problematic vehicles and just want something well-proven. Not saying that the viper motor is anything but that.

Anyways, whats done is done, and i've already spent an embarrassingly amount of coin on the x runner. I'm almost to the point of no return now :)

For trackdays, and baby hauling, I need at least access cab. But a six speed SRT-10 sounds like too much tire burning fun.

As for speed, There are ways to make NA 280ish HP out of that taco motor, but all of it will make the truck not smog legal. Trying to stay away from that!

"…almost to the point of no return"…

Stan, you know that in business you don't look at what you spent, but what you are going to spend and what that gets you. Like I said, the problem is the retained value with heavily modified vehicles. The Dodge line is a good truck line, IMO. We've had no issues aside from thinner metal than in the Chevy/ Fords, but overall, the mechanical stuff has been great. The Viper motor is a tuner's dream too…and there's a great aftermarket for both American trucks.

Here's the REAL problem with spending money on the S-runner; it won't change what it is to most people, meaning, to you it's a SC Toyota. To everyone else, it's a Toyota Tacoma. The Lighting and SRT-10's have a healthy following/ respect from most car guys. It's kinda nice to be in that group…if that makes sense. If you want to SC something, get the SRT-10 and SC that. 650 hp, coming up!

what group does my 266k mile F150 put me into? the broke dick cheapass club?

:p

You better get rid of it because it makes me like you . Because I like inner-directed consumers that know that vehicles are tools, not image-enhancement devices. Drive on, bro, as long as she rolls.

I get what you're saying, but this is not where I am in life. I originally wanted a basic 4-door taco to haul bikes with until I started thinking of how boring it would be to drive a vehicle without good cornering abilities. The X-Runner has exceeded my expectations (with suspension work for course) I just want a motor to go with it.

i'm not planning on selling this to make money or to even break even. I'm using it for what it is. I don't need respect from car guys, I have no aspirations to 'race' anyone from stoplight to stoplight!

Not sure if that's a veiled swipe at me, but my vehicles are not 'image-enhancement devices'

I'm a gear/motorhead -- like most folks here. I buy/ride/drive what I like and what makes me happy. Don't care what other's think.

Everyone has a different set of hobbies. Freddo may not like want to update his truck because that's what works for him, just like I don't upgrade my computer often because it works for me. But i'm not going to tell the dude that just dropped $1,000 this seasons GPU that it's a waste of money.

19% gain for that much $$$ not even worth it a little bit. now if you could find a used one for a couple grand might be a little a little better, but in the end its still a run about. if your looking for HP get a truck with a larger following with cheaper mods. the Taco's cost way to much to get the HP out of them. Check out the price of TTC's stuffs. No wonder the Supra folks started going elsewhere lol.

No, of course not a swipe at you or beloved BARFers. It's just that so many people in society are outer-directed and he asked the question. I think it's cool that freddo drives and drives.

Editing in: I don't make veiled swipes. I don't like that sneaky shit.

I had an 02 Highlander with 165. I know I could have easily gotten more out of it and wanted to. But I wanted the 4WD and tow capacity so with great regret, I let that paid-for ride go to a new home. I am not wild about how the new thing looks, I like the previous gen better but couldn't find low miles on one..There are cars that look better but this was the one that functions. To me they are tools. If they look OK, that's a bonus. The only vehicles that have truly outstanding looks are so far out of my price range that they are an abstraction.

Got it Stan. If not needing to race anyone, then why bother with the SC? We're different in that respect, I suppose. I'd prefer to have something that is the best in class and near stock, just because I hate taking baths on auto trades.

Cause he can roast Lightnings and RAM SRT-10's Berto!!

J/K tho it really wakes the motor up. Don't forget he'll recoup some investment when he sells.
