Trolling and Debating. What's the Difference?

I call this playing Devil's advocate. Many times a thread completely becomes one sided. Playing Devil's advocate should be serious representation.

Autta try it sometimes going against the popular notion. There isn't any rewards beyond attempting to have a balanced discussion. Example next time a BARF Religious thread bash starts. Try being the Christian among atheists.
This isn't the audience for some opinions.

One time I got into a lane splitting discussion with a woman with 3 kids and a minivan. My bravado made me look like a psycho in her eyes.

If you want to take an extreme position to see how it flies, good luck. For example, showing Christian tolerance towards atheists and expecting a warm reaction.

Can we discuss this in Hawthorne?

I don't know, that would be interesting to find out how other people use the information. It results in some serious emotional flaming from the popular side of the issue. There is always the principle to have both sides represented.

Thanks goodness its just discussion forums. I could seriously make people cry. :D

For instance Casey Anthony trial. I didn't see any real evidence to convict her of murder. This did not play well with about everyone I talked to. Low and behold she is innocent.

Hawthorne ? have a good one.

In my eyes (and small brain), trolling and baiting is almost the same thing. The difference being, Baiting is posting something to get one certain member riled up, trolling is posting something to get the whole BARF community in a frenzy. Baiting is easy but it takes a master baiter to be a good troll.

So if someone knows that their opinion would run counter to everyone else in the thread, should they withhold posting because it would probably get everyone into a frenzy?

Posting on BARF IS baiting and trolling.

No, the LEO Forum is the place where people who hate cops go to cops to ask for advice on how to get out of trouble for something they do in front of the cops. Then when they get told they're fucked, they go back to hating cops.

The Political Forum is where people hate everybody.

:laughing

I should have mentioned that I don't think that ALL trolling is bad, when debating/arguing it's one of the tools we all use... too much though, and not only do we think you're not too bright (because of your lack of tools to communicate with) but your intentions become suspect.

Yeah, there are some folks that just can't agree with anyone, I think that's another symptom of someone who primarily trolls......nothing really constructive to offer, but occasionally entertaining.

I admit it-born and raised in NY.

This debate reminds me of my job for some reason.
We have @ 200 occupants in the community on any given day. We have @15 housing units where they stay until release/transfer date.
We have 2 special housing units for those who can't "assimilate" in the larger community.
One unit is for those who fight others. They are locked down and go through a "assimilation training course" They get to transfer back in to gen pop after they display the "correct" behaviors. We've had some residents in this unit do well after one week while others must stay for longer periods of time.

The other special housing unit is for those in the community that never ever learn how to get along with others. These individuals display certain developmental disorders and /or psychological problems. The particular individuals can never be placed back in gen pop. They do not have the capacity to be anyone else besides themselves.

The first housing unit sounds like our suspension situations.
The second described housing unit is akin to BARF's banning of members forever.
Additionally, if you are disliked or known as a troll by a large percentage of posters you probably belong in that group. Can't get along, do not have the tools or inclination to socialize no matter how hard you try.

All of the above quote is impossible on teh BARF but nice try at a possible chance to bait. :rofl :twofinger

bunch of crybabies around here these days who shout trolling more than Jessie Jackson pulls out the race card.

Yikes !

odd/funny how the "real world" absorbs so much abusive behavior and keeps working. I'd surely love to place many people, who consider themselves to be; "smarter, tougher, better, more capable" than everyone else, into your sort system and see where they shake out.

Well, that's a funny one.

Not everyone knows the details (I barely do).

People mistake sympathy for facts. I think Casey Anthony should have done 1000 years, but I guess not.

Take a local case. I thought Johannes Meserhle should have done 1000 years, but I figured involuntary manslaughter is what they would get him on.

goes both ways...

if an atheist, would you want this guy on your side..?

Trolling is using a line (that one may use, that same line multiple times) to evoke a response...

I can give multiple examples, past and present- but I prefer not to call anyone out or feed the trolls. :cool
