Two huge quakes hit Venezuela! 7.2 and 7.5

I made fun of that goofy NorCal Quake a few days ago, but multiple in the low 7's is serus bidnezz.
Yeah...I was still in bed...
Just after 8 am...
It was kind of long...
I thought a car was running into my house...

As an OG in the Bay, I judge all earthquakes on the Loma Prieda scale.

For those that remember when the Bay Bridge collapsed the top deck and squashed motherfuckers alive on the lower deck beneath it, that was a 6.9.

One should also remember that the Richter Scale is not an even table of incremental increases. The difference between a 6 and a 7 is staggering. Allow that to color your vision of what happens when 2 mid 7's hit Venezuela.

Only one person died on the bridge that day because they drove over the edge after the segment collapsed. On the other hand, 42 people were killed when the 880 freeway Cypress Structure pancaked onto itself.

[feels like KG of TNT]
you feel an earthquake you should ask where is the epicenter.. I was 4000 miles away from Venezuela 7.4 quake. I didn’t feel the 7.4 at all.
If I feel an earthquake in the Bay Area that feels like a 4.0 and the epicenter was in Los Angeles /holy crap.
unless you’re at the epicenter,/you can’t estimate how big a quake is until you know where the epicenter is.

We should have been there! I was heading to an appointment on San Pablo Ave in Berkeley with my pregnant wife. I got side tracked (as usual) and ended up running about a half hour late. We were coming thru Hayward heading there when it hit. I've never felt bad about being late since that day.

Glad it worked out for you.
Sometimes a second or more difference can be the difference between death and no event.

I remember the one near LA...In the 70's
Edit...Feb. 9, 1971
6.6 near what is now Magic Mountain...
I recall watching our BRICK wall wave like the ocean...
FUN times.

60 people died.

Thanks for the reminder that there are so many humans out there who have been devastated by this. Very sad.

Godspeed to the lost and missing. :rip

I was watching a show about Guatemala because I visited Guatemala, and it was one of my favorite places in the world. This all came about because I had to have an implant put in my mouth yesterday, and I am absolutely terrified of dentists. So while the dude was drilling away like some sort of demented construction worker, I went to my happy place. My happy place is Lake Atitlán. Specifically, it was this spot I hiked up to that had a coffee and corn field on the side of a 45 degree slope and I was able to sit down, smoke a fat bowl of local weed, and stare at the lake and surrounding volcanoes.

Anyhoooo, I digress. LOL. The show talked about how the capital of Guatemala used to be this city (Almolonga) until 1541 when it was demolished by an earthquake. They then relocated it to another city (Antigua) which was demolished by an earthquake in 1773. They then moved it to another city (Guatemala City) where it currently exists.

When I was in Lake Atitlan, they had a 7.2 earthquake. I was on a boat crossing the lake and saw a bunch of dust along the shoreline. I assumed it was just some road construction. We ended up in the local town (San Pedro) and I waited in the street while my GF went in a pharmacy to get something. Apparently all of the shelves were knocked over and it was mass destruction. I had no idea. I stood outside like a bufoon marveling at how beautiful everything was. I felt like that dude in Shawn of the Dead.

Anyway, here is my happy place.

At least 20 dead following 7.4 magnitude earthquake in Colombia

What we know so far

• Deaths reported: At least 20 people are dead after a 7.4 magnitude earthquake was recorded Monday in western Colombia, according to local officials.
• Where it occurred: The epicenter was located in San José del Palmar, in the department of Chocó, about 280 kilometers (or about 173 miles) west of Bogotá. The tremor was felt strongly in the nation’s capital, with alarms sounding and people evacuating to the streets as a precaution.
• The response: The governor of Colombia’s northwestern area of Chocó confirmed “there are injured people and severe damage to buildings” in the regional capital. Colombian President Abelardo de la Espriella — who just took office on Friday — has convened an emergency committee to address the damage.
Different country and not on the same fault, but likely related to the Venezuela quakes.
