Got my ticket to ride. :thumbup

7/28/13 Update

Holy crap, 8 days left till the 65th Annual SpeedWeek.

Things I'm thinking (getting worried) about:

- Can I ditch these last few pounds off my torso before we travel?
- Trailer Tires. Dammit I need Trailer Tires again. 8 of them.
- Ready the rigs.

It looks like there will be a couple of us battling for the record in class.
Keep your fingers crossed!

8/14/13 Update

Just returned from SpeedWeek. Lots to tell, but we fell short on the production bike by 7MPH after 4 days of trying. We just couldn't get out of 198 to 199 and failed to make the 206 needed for the record. So, I made the decision to not hurt the motor so we could continue in the points race we have in the West and leave early.

Big congrats to Jim Hoogerhyde with a smoking fast run and his induction into the two club, my competitor in the East Jack Broomall who still holds his title @ B'ville and a special shout out to Ralph Hudson who took a nasty spill, and my buddy Chris Giles who did his best to smash his blown fuel car and take a trip to SLC for an MRI.

It was an incredible week, and to be a part of the 65th Annual SpeedWeek with a field of talent that deep was nothing short of amazing.

I will put together a little play by play thread here so you can see a start to finish standpoint of LSR (Land Speed Racing) in the Motorcycle Class and two different bikes we run. This thread will be for the upcoming 2012 Season. (Edit, now into the 2013 season)

Hi Papi,

Thanks for this cool thread, now I have a better idea how much work and dedication go into LSR ... Jim H tells a good story, but informative threads on BARF, not so much ... :laughing

We were able to listen to some of the webcast this year, now we'll have another racer to root for! :thumbup

see you in the paddock,

8/25/13 Update

Well finally getting back to the groove after SpeedWeek. I had a lot of time to think about changes and things to fix. While it wasn't the best speeds for us, the consistency of the high 190's <195 to 199> gave me confidence in the seat and repositioning my body geometry a bit.

The one thing that keeps eating at me though are the "what ifs" . Mainly a change we should have made on Tuesday before packing it in. If I were to do it again, knowing what ate at me on the way home, I would have taken a day away from the salt, relaxed a bit, came back and made the bike changes I wanted, then ran again end of week. It would have been important to get that baseline. Either way, live and learn. I need to put my head back into the dirty mile at Elmo so we can keep our points up, and finish out the year. The Top3 Bikes, which we are #2 currently, is really close in points. One slip up, or missing a race will knock us down to #3 or #4 fast. So it's vital we keep the motor healthy and try to set another record in September. I have a lot of little fixes we need to do before September 15. This next race at El Mirage is the most important race this year for us. We must get at least 200 points.

Here's a few pix from SpeedWeek 2013 of our effort:

The plan was to run on Course 1, which is the longest. We switched over to Course 2 as the conditions on 1 were to soft. Here's the event map.

By the 6th day, and the 4th day running at Top Speed, I was getting a little worn out.
This picture was snapped before my last run on Tuesday, and a 198 pass.
The 5 mile stare was getting a little fuzzy.

Getting saddled in to the run, passing the first mile marker.
As the speeds increase, I will push my ass back and get down farther.

Our last run slip of the event. We only needed 7 MPH more for the record and Red Hat.
But trust me, 7 MPH more was a long way away for us that day sadly.

We did our best, thankfully didn't blow up the motor, ran a hard 6 passes and at least beat my Aussie Competitor by 5MPH or greater. We remain #3 in the Bonneville Nationals behind Jack Broomall and Nancy W., and still hold the #1 Production 1650 Bike in the SCTA and the Dirty Mile. I'm proud of our little teams effort, we are way ahead so far with two new Records (May and July) and our little Production Bike is pulling her weight this year and performing well. We must keep it together for 3 more races and possibly remain in the Top3 Overall in Bikes for 2013.

9/10/13 Update

While rain has dampened BUB and WoS this past couple weeks, El Mirage on 9/15 is a whole other animal. There has been some drops on the dry lake bed, so feet are on the ground checking conditions.

We have cleaned up the bike a bit, dumped the fuel and changed her back to the mile drag configuration of El Mirage. We run a unique setup for the dry lake, as the track is much shorter and faster than Bonneville. And actually, I prefer the dry lake as a venue for many of my own personal reasons. It's probably why we do better there.

The game plan now is all about the points race. Being the current #2 bike overall in the west has presented some unique challenges I have never worried about previously. The first is we must keep this bike running. Sounds easy, but it's not. A full season of Top Speed puts stress on a motor and bike like no other event. I am starting to notice fatigue in the bike as well. After 5 years on this chassis (Production Bike), she is getting tired no matter how many times you rebuild her.

Next is keeping the motor alive. We put a lot of abuse on her at SpeedWeek. Doing multiple passes WFO makes a motor soft. My riding style must be sensitive to that fact so we don't smoke her before seasons up. We have a scheduled 3 more events, plus World Finals if we go (weather holds up).
So all I am thinking now is keeping our SCTA points up, trying to get another record before October and just surviving. It's been a long tough season so far, but we have done good and it's been our best year yet.

Here's to keeping it fast and low in the mile in 10 days. :ride

9/11/13 Update

Crap, The 9/15 El Mirage meet is Cancelled due to the course still being a bit wet and muddy.

I really wanted to be there and throw down hard in the first round. Nothing has been on mind more this last week than that. Mentally prepared to just go out a dominate our class and push the Record up a bit more. The bike is ready, I am ready, the team is ready.

Now she just sits, resting till October. Kinda blows my whole day and week apart. :(

9/25/13 Update

Another race cancelled. Damn. This time World Finals @ Bonneville. The rain has been brutal this year on LSR venues. To much water prevents the lakebed from drying out enough for us to run on.

We have two events left for this year, Oct. 20th and then the season closer on Nov 9-10th at El Mirage.

Fingers crossed it stays dry in the desert for just 2 more months. Hard to believe the seasons almost over already. :(

10/16/13 Update

Can you say three-peat?

Yep, another race cancelled due to weather. This time El Mirage still to soft to race on from rain last week.

September Cancelled -
World Finals Cancelled -
October Cancelled -

One race left, November. Points still frozen. We are still the #1 1650CC Production bike 4 years running, and the #2 overall bike in points in the SCTA.

But I'd still like another shot at getting 200 in the dirt before the year is up.
I'd also like a shot to be the #1 bike in west, just once. :ride

Sucks that the races have cancelled. Great work though! Let me know when things die down, I still want to come check out the bike and BS!

11/5/2013 Update

Well the last LSR event of the year is this weekend. We have been on hold for the past 3 events because of Rain. It looks like the gods of speed will allow a temporary reprieve this Saturday and Sunday so we can go fast just one more time in 2013.

There is a lot at stake here for us. Our little team has managed to hold the #1 spot now for 4 years in 1650 Production. This will be our final attempt to raise that bar just one more time. With two records under our belt this year at El Mirage, I'd really love a 200 in the dirt mile. We have changed our set-up to be more Drag like, so I know the bike has it in her.

The other thing we have right now is points. As said earlier, we are the #2 bike in points behind super fast Ralph Hudson. Man what an honor it is to be in Production as #1 there, and now #2 overall bike points behind somebody like Raph who is an incredible racer. I just cant believe we made it this far.

So here's to a great year, and one more shot at 2013.
Wish us luck please, we need it. :thumbup

I hope to come home with a big smile. But mostly, I'll just be happy to come home after a great year and still tell about the wonderful adventure we've had. It's been pretty cool. :party

Roll fast and strong.
