Utah Fever

I can't seem to find the doghouse smiley. But it feels like I found it! :teeth

How can I forget to mention to the Kiwi's Saga of the Southwest? Campbell must be having a wonderful time scooting and scrambling the remote countryside. Thanks for posting his journey for all of us to enjoy, ThumperX.

:laughing

One of these days, I'll be able to do this trip too...

I think ThumperX has put you in the doghouse because she has a body of awesome trip reports (always with cool geological details and observations) as well. Worth the search in Adventure Riding!

WoodsChick's trip reports are sublime. Not only does she paint pictures with her words, she speaks volumes with her pictures.

WC's and Nemo's trip reports are always a treat. Even though neither of my bikes have knobbies, their trip reports nourish my soul.

If you haven't ridden dirt...Your bound to feel intimidated, with a little skittering movements that pavement doesn't deliver...So the feel is like the edge of disaster.

And pavement doesn't train your brain, in recovery moves...

Dirt your doing it all the time.

Thing is....street sport bike tires, do extremely well, because of their radial construction, and major contact, if there is firmness to the surface.

On this Utah trip, you're not going to be full on booggy, on these dirt roads with your bike...So....if it looks good (no severe washed out and rutted) You can do just fine.

You'll have a ball. The Hornet's suspension and ground clearance suck for the rougher stuff but it's light weight and nimbleness more than make up for it.

Wow! Just spent over an hour reading, no savoring, 3 select trip reports authored by ThumperX! May I say :hail :hail :hail to ThumperX and friends! Thanks for the advice on the 599 too. I only have 10-20 miles on fire roads, all of which were on my mule, a shadow 600. I have never subjected the 599 to such frivolity.

Lou, your comments regarding my reluctance of riding dirt roads on this trip are spot on. Your points are well taken. There might be a second rider with me on a vstar bagger. Their comfort level on the dirt will probably be the deciding factor. Moki Dugway is a must-do.

Thanks for the heads-up, Nemo. Except for the July 2013 sierra trip, I had not seen much of ThumperX's trip reports. The Adventure sub-forum was seemingly dirt trail adventure oriented, at least it seemed that way to me. I have been, uh, educated in the error of my judgement in that regard and read some muy excellente trip recountings in the process!:laughing:ride

Right on. I'm leaving for Utah soon--if I'm back before you leave I may be able to provide some intel.

Sooooo, long time no post! Rode through 4 states today, or portions thereof. Ended up in Cedar City after a 550 mile day. Saw Hoover Dam and took the scenic way 'round Lake Mead to get to St. George. Gas is $3.50/G and some freeways are posted 80 mph!!

Tomorrow is undecided. Hwy 14 is a possibility. Any recommendations, BARF?:ride

If you are headed east I'd suggest something like this. Do it in 2 days or risk serious monkey butt. This takes you through Zion, Bryce, and Canyonlands. When are you do back to work? ::ride

I don't know how to embed bing maps but prefer them over the new google maps

That route takes 89 north and bypassez Bryce Cnyn and hwy 12. Maybe you're suggestinv I return west via hwy 12? I have until easter.

Weather is phenomenal this week. Thinking hwy 14 to hwy 12. Can go 14 to 89 north if the scenery and road warrant. Talk to me....

Definitely! Wind your way through Bryce, Zion,
Buy a National Parks Pass!

Thanks Thumper. I am going to see how far and how high I can get on hwy 14. If i can make it over the pass, then i'll have to chose north or south.

If you find yourself in Ogden,

OMG, I have major history in Ogden, and I didn't know anything about Browning being located in Morgan.

I sure was intimately involved with his BAR, as I came up through the ranks of the Army infantry.

Next time I go to Ogden, I'll hit up that museum. :thumbup
