Utah Fever

Don't know what your time constraints and inclinations are, but if it were me I'd go 143 to 12 to Torrey and then east on 24 then south on 95. Then to Monument Valley, North Rim and Zion on the way back. Since you started at Cedar City I'm not sure there's a clean way to do Zion first and then all the others without a lot of backtracking. Just my $.02...

I pretty much did this to Torrey. I really like the mountains. Took 14 over the pass to 89. The gate at 148 was still swung shut due to snow. Spent 15 minutes in Bryce Cnyn at left the hordes there.p

Hwy 12, I love thee. Thine slippery tar snakes, not-so-much. Ye hide in the posted 30 mph corners that could easily be taken at twice that. Bless thee for hissing at me, and not taking a bite of my flesh.

Did I mention how awesome 12 is between Bryce Cnyn and Torrey? A lil bit of painted desert, elevated roadbed, and wonderful mountain twisties. Simply delish!

Ooooh, dinner time. Steak and red wine to-night.

Anyone have any rides/food/lodging for hwy 550 between Montrose, Colorado and Aztec, New Mexico?

The weather is good and the roads are "dry and clear" . Gotta ride Colorado while the weather is gooood! :ride

Made it to Montrose. Hwy 141 from Naturita to Whitewater was stunning. It follows the river for 44 miles. The geology slowly changes from Utah sandstone pillars and cliffs to mountain meadows enclosed by granitic crags and mountaintops.

Tomorrow, hwy 550!

The 550 was clear and a very nice ride. Ouray is a very cute village built up against sheer walls. Spent a couple of hours in Silverton. The train is running there yet, so it was a vitual ghost town. No people. Spending the night in Durango. Will do a loop tomorrow. 550 will be the return leg. There is good grub, brew, and pie at the pickle bar in silverton.

I'm glad you got to do Hwy 12 :thumbup It's simply stunning, and so much fun! But blimmin' tar snakes!!!

I am still on the road. Rode through Albuquerque and spent the night in Socorro. Lovely town, Socorro.

Incredibly difficult posting pics from my phone. Let me drop a link to the best pie in the world. Without question, the best. No other pie is in the same galaxy.

I am so envying you your trip :ride

Thumper, I had the apple/jalapeno pie, ala mode per their recommendation on a lazy afternoon. I don't know if it was the pie, the continental divide, or the atmosphere. Shortly thereafter, was a feeling of warmth. I could not discern real from imaginary. Inverse trigonomic functions flowed, and the infinity of the number line warped back upon itself. After some time, I found myself amongst simple integers and life was no longer a complex problem.

All due to pie in pietown.:)

:rofl

If I could just beat the imaginary numbers that seem to screw with my budget.

Don't let those imaginary numbers get you down or beat your budget. Perhaps inverting and multiplying is the solution to budget bliss.:devil

Just drove through Sedona, Grand Canyon South Rim, and finally Press-cuit.

Prioritize...Works for me anyway. I choose to live in a plywood box that I made myself, and live in the woods.

No bills...I can afford the best bike for my use, with the best components for that use. I just bought the best wheels for my car yesterday.
I'm so giddy with how these (Cooper CS4 tires) feel, I'm barely managing to maintain any shred of control :laughing :cool :party

Mmmmm...Pie Town sounds super! I'm riding Bay to Texas and back in mid-May, so this may be a must stop place!!:teeth

Budman's 1 week thread got me to post my route here. I have been busy catching up at work and life.

I took 12 days and rode 3000 miles. Discovered I like mountains over red desert sandstone. Also loved the pre-season solitude in the Colorado Rockies versus the hub-bub of tourist action at Utah's "Big 5" National Parks.

From Cedar City, UT. Hwy 14 heading east into Cedar Canyon.

Hwy 14 Midway Summit, elevation 9,896 feet. Hwy 148 to Cedar Breaks closed for winter.

"Too pooped to pump" photo op on the way to Kodachrome Basin State Park. A short excursion from hwy 12.

Lots of good riding and ever-changing scenery on hwy 12. This pic just east of Escalante.

Looking south from the Rim Rock motel in Torrey at the mountains just crossed along the way. Awesome road, hwy 12!

Downtown Ouray, CO. Did I mention I prefer the mountains over desert?

Looking at hwy 550 to Silverton via Red Mountain Pass, elevation 11,099 feet. Bring it!

Mid-day at Silverton. Pre-season. No train service until May. No crowds. Love, love, love it!

The museum at the Durango train station has a little bit of everything. Indians too.
DSC00854.JPG

Just west of Socorro, New Mexico, along hwy 60 is the Jansky Very Large Array Radiotelescope complex. 27 large dish antennas, spewing a combined datastream of 1 TB/sec.
DSC00901.JPG

A stop at the Jansky VLA is highly recommended. The museum was cool. Ouside, they had a hands on demonstration on measuring sun noise. Cool.
DSC00905.JPG

Further along the 60 pie-way is Pietown.
DSC00947.JPG

The Pie-O-neer pieshop in Pietown. Best pie anywhere. Bar none. The pie, they take seriously. Everything else...well...http://www.kubygirlproductions.com Good pie. Good times.
