I'd have to go back and read if the question was ever answered.

I think what would happen is that afflicted society would find a population in a declining death spiral, but everyone would live happily ever after.

You should have been born in the 1930s or somewhere around there when your opinions would have been totally okay. If you know anyone that has a time machine, ask them to use it so you can go back to that time.

The same reason nobody in a normal movie ever disappears halfway through a scene and comes back 20 minutes later saying "fuck I shouldn't have eaten that for lunch."
