What use is the front wheel fender for?

Take it off yer bike, ride it for 500 miles and answer yer own question.......

Hemper Guy! :thumbup

No fenders on my bike for 520 miles as of today.

Running over gravel it flings crap up but is not that bad at all.

The worst is the water from sprinkler run off....

But that is part of the fun in motorcycling!

It seems like a simple question but I can't figure out the answer. So, dear Barfers, what is the front wheel fender's purpose?

Never ridden in the rain, have you?:laughing

It works just like a rear fender. Although I doubt must of you guys know this given the number of fender eliminator kits I see around town.

Its like a big parachute that makes riding wheelies easier.

They prevent wind turbulence from affecting the smooth flow of air to your radiator or engine. Not having the correct fender can allow your bike to more easily over heat.

on a lot of bikes it protects the radiator from road debris
I got nervous when I didn't see radiator by the twelfth post. I feel better knowing that everyone isn't on an old dirt bike.

We need a new thread:

WHY do you remove your rear fender, douchebag?

One of my terrors is riding to Laguna Seca for MotoGP because I get pelted with rocks from all the gansta riders with their half hidden license plates, mini turn signals, and NO DANG rear fender.

Because they are ugly. You getting pelted with rocks is your problem, not mine. :twofinger

I don't think the front fender looks so bad.

That said, on the BMW ADV bikes the REAR fender is like, an accessory for some reason.

As a long time dirt rider I actually enjoy the quick sting of getting peppered with little rocks. It makes me laugh as I mutter "Fucker" to my self. Its part of riding. Try getting nailed in the chest by a softball sized boulder shooting off the back tire of a KX500 while traveling at 60+ mph. Thats not quite as much fun!

Yes, water, rocks, air flow.... But one more thing that is very important: On many bikes the fender includes a metal brace, that is in fact a fork brace to keep the forks in line as they are stressed by the up -down and side forces on the front end. The factory engineers are not just going for vanity and cleanliness.

Did that question really need to be asked?
