Whats a good beginner acoustic guitar

I have a really sweet Seagull acoustic I'd be willing to part with. It's solid top (cedar) and has a few scratches because cedar is fucking soft wood. But it plays well and makes beautiful noise. I can post up photos later if you want.

My seagull is a parlor guitar. So smaller body than a dreadnought and no way to hang a strap. I believe it's made for sitting and playing. But the sound is amazing.

Shoot, I might buy that sucker if budge doesn't. The d-nought is actually Ms. Bay Arean's guitar. Not easy enough to hold on the leather recliner at night.

My best friend owns acme music in oakland..But i though i would talk to my Barf brothers before i went over and got my head wrecked by him.

Like i said i dont really want to spend to much money on a guitar just in case my fingers get sore and i dont play it again:laughing.

Then grab a Yamaha.

Why a Yamaha.i dont even know anyone who plays a guitar,i will have to learn this by myself, can you learn to play one from youtube or do i have to bust out for lessons

Yamaha has a good cost to quality ratio. Guitar is one of the hardest instruments to play. Take a couple lessons to learn chords. But it simply will take you years to play decent. Need to build those finger calluses too.

Buy this! Seagulls are real nice, made in Canada I think. Cedar gives the guitar a nice sound, it's best for quiet playing and finger picking.

Your fingers WILL be sore for the first month so might as well just draw some sharpie lines on your dick and play that.

Practice up and come to the next Barf Jam! Which is on ......... (Someone set it up):thumbup

The Big baby is a 7/8th scale.
Taylors are not as finicky as other acoustics due in part to their bolt on necks.
I would guess that more than 3/4 of touring professional who buy their own guitars use Taylors.

I had a Baby Taylor. One of the first ones, 2004 model I think. It was made in Santee/El Cajon, not Mexico like the newer ones. It sounded outstanding for what it was.
I don't think it sounded small when played in a small room.
Never liked those Tupperware Ovations.

I sold my Baby down here for what I paid for it, after I got it back from my nephew, banged up and almost unplayable for me.

Taylor has an awesome warranty.
I should mention Carvin. They made some nice acoustics along with their stellar solid bodied guitars.

Now if I could only buy my Carvins back from my fellow BARFers...

I never cared much for Guilds, overbuilt and overpriced. Ovations are controversial. Their necks are well set up and they have decent tops. They pump out the sound. But I'll tell ya, as an armchair player who sits around and plays and plays, they are actually quite awkward to hold.

You got me curious, so I just searched through the Takamine archive and I think I have an F-350M. Gonna check it out when I get home this evening.

Yeah, I recall that Ovations sounded really good and everyone was playing them back then, but they just felt odd to me. And the Ma didn't care for them at all.

Wow, still going on.....

I know Triple said Yamaha, but I'd really avoid if I were buying. The sound and quality just isn't there.

Japanese made Takamines are nice, Alvarez Yairis are nice. Something from the Canadian factories are nice (Seagull, Godin, Norman, etc.).

You can buy a cheap acoustic for $50. It will sound, play and look like shit.

You can buy a cheap acoustic for $100. It will sound, play and look like shit.

If you are choosy you can buy an acoustic for $200 that MIGHT play well and look nice but will probably sound like shit.

If you look around and are choosy you can buy a decent acoustic guitar that MIGHT actually start to sound like an acoustic guitar for ~$300.

I'd offer this guy $200-$250 and see if he'd takes it....He doesn't seem to know what he has. It's a solid top, quality acoustic from Seagull and the text oif his ad suggests he'll bargain........

Seagull on CL: asking $300

These are RULES OF THUMB......

A decent acoustic guitar is going to be ~$500.

A nice acoustic guitar is going to be ~$1,000.

A good acoustic guitar is going to be ~$1,500.

A quality instrument is going to be >$2,000.

Something that will grab your passion is going to somewhere between $2,500 and $25,000 depending on the builder and the wood choices.

ETA: I hadn't looked at the Luthier's Collection site in a while. Oooof. They have a Traugott 12 fret with BRW. :drool
